You know what they say, ABC (always be charging). And now you have more options with the latest provider added to the BlueOval Charge Network:  BC Hydro!

Ford F-150 Lightning BlueOval Charge Network adds BC Hydro EV and Enhances Network Access BC HYDRO

With the addition of BC Hydro to the BlueOval Charge Network, you now have access to more than 629 charging ports at 146 sites across British Columbia with easy payment inside the FordPass app.

In addition, we’ve enhanced the way BlueOval Charge Network partner names are displayed within FordPass, so you’ll see even more new names, including: bp pulse, ChargeSmart EV, EVolve NY, InCharge, Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, and Pilot Flying J!

*drumroll please* Ford Charge – a network backed by Ford and located at Ford dealerships across the US and Canada has expanded to 320 dealerships with nearly 1,200 available charging ports. Read more about how one of our Ford dealers in Bow, NH is embracing public charging with Ford Charge.

With these changes, the BlueOval Charge Network expands to 21 partner networks across the US and Canada – all accessible with one app and one no-fee account:
  • BC Hydro
  • Blink
  • bp pulse
  • ChargePoint
  • ChargeSmart EV
  • Circuit Électrique
  • Electrify America (supports Plug & Charge)
  • EV Connect
  • EVgo
  • EVolve NY (supports Plug & Charge)
  • FLO
  • Ford Charge
  • FPL EVolution
  • Francis Energy
  • InCharge
  • IONNA
  • Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging
  • Pilot Flying J
  • Red E

As a reminder, when you’re at a charger, you can use your BlueOval Charge Network account to start charging in two ways:

  1. Plug & Charge (at supported network partners)
  2. FordPass mobile app activation (at all network partners)

If you’re not enrolled in BlueOval Charge Network, you can quickly enroll from the FordPass app – just tap Connected Services.

Is there any plan to get Blue Oval users member pricing at these various charging networks?

The good news is the vast majority of the BlueOval Charge Network partners have no complicated memberships and pricing to deal with - BlueOval Charge Network members get the same price as using those network's app, but without the hassle of all those apps.

Connected Navigation does include all these chargers (2022-2024 will need an update to see just Tesla, the rest are in there).

Looking forward to hearing how it goes! I used BC Hydro back in 2023 on a road trip from Michigan to Vancouver in my Mustang Mach-E and would have loved having everything in FordPass back then.

(thank Saskatchewan for all those bugs on the way over)

This is great news!

Please consider installing some of these to allow for pull-through charging for those of us that are on the road towing.

However the largest networks do have membership pricing. Tesla, EVgo, and EA offer member pricing that saves 25% to 45% off the pay as you go rate.

Charged all last week on BCHydro while on Vancouver Island camping trip. No issues with charging but this was before this notification from Ford. Only issue I had was multiple BCHydro are level 2 chargers which limited kWh to 50. Average speed of charge was 45-48 on these chargers and did not decrease significantly past 80 percent. Level 3 chargers up to 150 kWh were available in Sooke and Victoria and Nanaimo. Anything north of Nanaimo was Level 2.
Camping trip was great and power to 2 trailers at night and periodically during day worked fantastic.
BCHydro and FLO were interchangeable apps to start the charge sessions. I Loved the total cost to charge with the current exchange rate.
Good news all around!

"Level 2" is AC. 50 kW DC is still DCFC (sometimes called "Level 3" though that's not really a thing).

The reason the Lightning doesn't hit 50 kW is its relatively low battery pack voltage. The 50 kW chargers are 400 volts, 125 amps max. The current limit is the key. If you roll in at a low state of charge, your battery pack may only be at 340 or 350 volts so you'd only get 340 x 125 = 42.5 kW. The charge rate increases gradually as the state of charge increases , but never quite hits 50 kW. When the truck starts throttling the charge rate at around 88-89% the pack voltage is still just a hair under 400.

This effect is even more noticeable at the "100 kW" chargers they use. They are 500 volt, 200 amp. So you will typically only get 70-80 kW out of them in a Lightning with the battery at 350-400 volts, again depending on state of charge.

BC Hydro chargers have a great reputation for reliability, and cost the same throughout the province. Honestly the progress BC Hydro made on their charging network in 2023 was the impetus for me to finally go electric. They have not let me down. I'm happy to see the integration with Ford even though the BC Hydro app works well.

Connected Services - no option for anything but a US state address. Maybe they hide it somewhere. Why not just put a line for "Country" too much to ask?
