Saw this on a MME forum and wanted to know if this might be of benefit to Lightning owners who use public DCFC.

How does MME charging compare to Lightning using the same DCFC ?

Our charge curve is pretty great.

This is from Inside EVs, and for an extended range. However, I have a standard range battery and I found I was getting the same curve (maybe not peak at 160; I didn't pull in that low) and it just sits there for quite some time. The only thing I'd like to see is beyond 80% improved but really that's just me being greedy.

This MME update was just better compatibility with some of the charging networks (mainly EVGO from memory). It didn't make any changes to the charging curve. The MME did get an update to the charging curve awhile ago for a higher rate from 80% to 90%, but the Lightning already beats the new MME curve in that interval, so I wouldn't expect much, if any change.

In general the Lightning has a better charge curve than the MME, but charge times are about equal given the larger battery in the Lightning. in % per min. they are about the same.

It's my understanding that the mme, they upped the sharp dropoff at the end from happening at 80% up to happening at 85% or maybe 90% for some people.
From some of the videos I had watched before the lightning launch it sounded like Ford would possibly be sending different parameters to different vehicles based on usage. For example if you dona lot of DCFC, then they would leave your charging curve at a more conservative rate as to not damage the battery. However if you are a person that maybe only dcfc a couple times a year then they could possibly push it even higher or extend the curve to not start dropping off till 90%.

Thanks for the explanation - makes alot of sense!

I love my Lightning charge rates on the EA network to 90% but wondered about how the MME compares on DCFC since my wife's MME is being built next month....

One problem is it’s hard to figure out what you’re *supposed* get at a given station. I charged at an EA station tonight and went from 36% to 65% without any tapering in charge rate, it started at about 133kW and steadily rose to 141kW throughout the charge. I had previously seen 125-130kw at this station. It started dropping after 65% but i’m not sure if it was because the SOC or that the “boost” ended (this was 15-16 minutes into the charge).
I will say that I’ve charged on DCFC a fair amount and i’ve never seen as high as 140kW at 65% soc. So maybe the conditions were just perfect, or??? Who knows.

Yes, I have seen one time the charge rate was 170kW when plugged into a 350kW EA charger.

Didn't last very long - tapered off as the charge went over 40%.

The update that changed the 80% charging cliff was rolled out last year. The one referenced in the post starting this thread just fixed some EVGO compatibility issues.

When MME was first released, DC curve dropped to about 12kW at 80%. Late last year they put out an update (21P22) that improved DC charging to about 50kW between 80% and 90%. At 90% it still drops to 15kW. I think Lightning is already at that level or a little better. 21P22 had to be installed by the dealer.
