Top Gear did a full walkthrough of it, Such a slick UI. Would be a nice upgrade for sure, but I highly doubt it.

Hopefully, it is in the works with @Ford Motor Company. This may have something to do with Ford's recent announcement of software developer layoffs. It never made sense to me for manufacturers who specialize in vehicle design and manufacture to attempt to do proprietary software development and UI for simple tasks.

I ran across this in my corporate Engineering career. Our division combined purchased equipment with proprietary equipment, and incorporated the equipment into buildings for unique manufacturing processes. Well over half of our designs were composed of non-proprietary equipment and building structures. Our corporation used a proprietary CAD system running on an IBM mainframe computer, which NONE of our equipment suppliers and building designers used. On the other hand, ALL of our equipment suppliers and building designers used AutoCAD. The common sense thing to do was for our corporation to use AutoCAD. But the corporate IT staff insisted on using the proprietary CAD system and IBM mainframe. The problem was due to NIH ... Not Invented Here ... amongst the corporate IT staff. A huge benefit of using AutoCAD, in addition to its widespread availability and use, was that designers and Engineers were already trained on it. Even after years using the proprietary CAD system, AutoCAD users could run circles around the proprietary CAD users in productivity.

It is a similar situation with our vehicles. Owners are already "trained" in Apple or Android systems and UI. The common sense thing to do is to use those systems and UI for control of all non-critical vehicle systems. It may make sense to use proprietary software systems to control critical vehicle functions such as the drivetrain and battery management. But, non-critical functions like navigation, climate control, audio control, etc., should be done with existing software systems and UI, such as Apple and Android.

I feel like I'm really missing the point of this, but that's cool I guess.

If this ever comes to the lightning via an OTA update I hope you could set up the truck to just use regular carplay. I like the delineation between ford's UI for the truck stuff and apple's UI for the phone stuff.

It's not happening on our trucks unfortunately.

Some of this is great for those of us who use Waze and want the graphics on the instrument cluster

Yeah I’d be very surprised if our trucks get this. It’s a miracle we have the Apple Maps and battery state of charge integration.

CarPlay/Apple Maps has worked with Ford sync since 2016 for F150 and Expedition.

Right but recently (this year) Apple added EV SOC and charger trip routing support for various cars and trucks including Lightning

All the millions and or billions of dollars they spent on project Titan, which was later canceled should provide some better integration!

I think the original article was saying that you could choose which screens to use, which is kind of what we can do now!
I’m sure Ford is able to tell if we are using CarPlay or android auto by going through the data from the truck.

Edit:
I just watched the video with the yellow Aston Martin showing all the stuff currently on CarPlay Ultra. This could be a great move by Ford to work with Apple to make the software better!!

Inflection point for Automakers:
I've posted this before elsewhere but I think I think it's worth watching again. If you ask Farley, I think he knows they've lost this fight. Because the car is feeding the data to CarPlay or AA they'll always have those metrics and data but content and design-wise, why not let the consumer control that? Better yet, give them the choice between vendors.
