I have seen the past that some people have modified a J1772 extension to fit a FCSP but cutting off a piece of the plastic.

My question is: what did they use to cut it? I don’t have much of a handy tools and I want to make sure I buy the right item needed for the job.

Instead of cutting, buy this new adapter, which is designed for the purpose - Thunderstorm Lite from A2Z. 10% off with code FORDFORUM.

The A2Z Thunderstorm Lite has a NACS connector on the vehicle end - you'll then also need an 80A rated NACS to J1772 adapter (the A2Z is a good one).

That downs do it if you actually want to use a J-1772 extension cord with your FCSP.
You can use a NACS extension cord with a NACS to J1772 adapter on the end; or a J1772 extension cord with the NACS to J1772 adapter placed before it.

But I think you will not be able to find a J1772 or NACS extension cord that is safe to use with an 80A vehicle and charger, so if you were hoping to put a Lightning, Porsche EV, older Tesla etc. that can draw more than 48A at the end of that cable - that's a recipe for a fire, don't do it.

My FCSP is set to 48A due to the limited capabilities of my home and I don’t do inter to use the bidirectional energy function.

I failed to mention it but I already have the A2Z J1772 extension cord.

Modifying the plastic with a Dremel is a better option than adding two adapters to the chain.

You are right that the extension cords are 48A max. Fortunately you can turn down the power while using one. I’d limit it to 40A just to be safe.

If you don’t have a Dremel tool or a similar rotary tool, you can get a battery-powered one cheap. Use a cutting blade to make the vertical cuts, then the horizontal cut. Once you’ve tested to make sure it fits, use the barrel and round rotary cutters to clean up the edges.

Like others have said a Dremel tool would work.

Another option would be a variable speed oscillating multi-tool, e.g, the WEN 2312 like the one I got on Amazon for about $35. (now $44 at Amazon or Home Depot).

Very useful for cutting a variety of things, from metal to plastic to wood. Especially good in tight spaces where a regular saw or jig saw won't fit well. This is a small 2A one but does the job.
