I've used a Canadian all-EV charging port cover called Ma Capuche for years on two EVs. It's great for heavy snow and freezing rain/ice. Well-made, inexpensive, easy to use, effective and almost indestructible.

Their web site is in French and in English... user's choice on the top right. "Ma capuche" means "my hood".

This is an unnecessary solution for a non-existent problem.

I'm a Canadian owner and have been a daily driver EV person for years. My cars have always lived outside and have been charging in all of the worst conditions: rain, sleet, snow, ice, freezing rain, hail..... all of it. The breaker has been tripped only twice that I can ever remember, caused by crazy lightning storms in the area both times.

But don't believe me, have a close look at the plug and the port on the truck, see how the pins are designed, observe the rubber seal on the inside of the plug. Water cannot get in there if it is engaged properly. The designers have thought of all of this already long ago.

Everyone will be fine and no one is gonna get electrocuted. Better yet, don't buy these nonsense products and save yourself a few bucks.

I dont believe the concern is electrocution, but being able to actually shut the charge port when it's caked with ice or snow. How do you fare there?

This is why I use mine, as conditions occasionally suggest.

To be fair, with a little work (currently a 20% off sale) you can get the the oem kit down to about $50-$70.. maybe use some fordpass points if you got em?
Yeah? I was looking on various sites that posted prices of 75 or 80, but their shipping put it back to that near $100 mark again. I'm gonna go check.

Exactly. My issue is rain. My "nozzle" gets loaded with water and when I unplug it drips out all over my legs if I'm not careful. I've got better, but have to shake the heck out of it before putting it back on the mount. I was fairly sure that an EV with the ability to charge outdoors would have some decent electrocution hazard protection!

Best I could find was %15. $80 is still stupid for what it is.

And the effort needed to install and remove every time!

There have been some reports of problems with snow and icing up, as well as water getting into charge port,

And it could be an issue if using the Ford branded adapter for NACS - the warning that came with it even mentions "moisture water and snow:"

PS: the adapter has an IP67 rating which seems pretty good - but I believe it is referring to the enclosure of the adapter, not the connections with the NACS plug and the Lightning charge port - connections are almost always the weakest link in any electrical/electronic circuit.

I don’t think I’ve ever had an issue with it. With the truck or any other EV. Manual or motorized port. My cars takes the family skiing in the mountains too.

For it to be caked on to that extent, we’re talking about a snow/thaw/freeze cycle.

Basically, unplug and close when you clean your truck or car off and you’ll be fine.

Otherwise if you’re the type of person who lets it sit for a couple of days resulting in 3inches of ice below the snow..then yea, you’ll also have issues with the charge port door.

My experience wasn't yours... I had a couple incidents of ice/freezing rain that froze my charger door open. That's when I bought one of these type of shields so I didn't have to defrost with a heat gun or hairdryer before driving off.

At the time my truck was sitting exposed to the southwest, the primary direction from which storms seem to come in this area. Everyone has to determine on their own if this kind of device makes sense for them, but once I had mine in place, I no longer had to worry about the door freezing open. Happy to have it indoors now, but was definitely worth the $20 or so I paid on Amazon.
