Last weekend, I completed a road trip from Cleveland, Ohio, to Indianapolis for the IMSA 6 Hour at the Bricks.

I started the trip at 100%, which allowed me to make it to Indy with only a 19-minute charging stop. Once at Indy, I was able to use my 12% of charge to get around for two days.

The evening before leaving, I hit up a Tesla Supercharger and was reminded yet again how bad the chargers thermal throttle due to cable temps. It took 44 minutes to go from 9% to 80%.

The trip back was a bit slower due to super heavy rain slowing speeds down to 50 mph at times. Because I left Indy with ~78%, my charging stop was a bit longer. Still, I was able to go from Indy to almost Mansfield before charging. I did get pretty low SoC arriving at the EVgo Charger at 5%. I was a bit uneasy going that low, but so far, using battery percentage to determine range seems to be working. I was able to make it home without charging again, arriving with 4% SoC.

All in all, a successful road trip. I traveled with a buddy that’s never done a road trip in an EV. Overall, he said he was impressed and that it’s nowhere near as slow or as stressful as some on social media would lead you to think. IMSA action at Indy was awesome and gave us an up-close experience with the new Corvette ZR1X.

Wife and I have done Akron to Indianapolis 3 times this year in my standard range Pro. Each time we notice more and more places to charge. We generally stop twice, which allows us to arrive with plenty of charge.

Nice! What brings you to Indy so often? Yeah, the 20 min charge was good enough to arrive at the motor speedway with 12%. I think if I charged for 30 min I would have been able to arrive at Indy with 30% remaining. I figured I’d be better to charge in downtown Indy somewhere. Unfortunately no Ionna or EVgo options downtown…. Tesla gets the job done but the Superchargers are a good bit slower to 80%.

Our oldest daughter moved there back on January. I also like the Tesla chargers. Found one on the east side of Indy that gave variable rates based on time of day. Me being an early riser, was able to charge for .38/ kwh.

Nice! $0.38 isn’t bad at all. The 400kW Ionna chargers in Springfield is $0.35kWh if you stop there.
