The free ride couldn't last forever (and ended in recent years in other states already). I think It's only fair to pay some additional registration fee since EV's aren't paying road taxes otherwise. Gas tax in NJ is 42.3 cents/gallon (state) plus 18.4 cents/gallon (federal) = 60.7 cents per gallon. So, if you drive 12k miles in a car that gets 25 MPG, you would pay $$291.36 (480 gallons x $0.607). You do get screwed though if you only drive a few thousand miles a year.

I get that, and I agree with what you are saying. However like you said you get screwed over if you drive less. I don't drive 12K per year, nor does my wife. So we are going to have to start paying in 2025 and 2026 when the registration needs to be renewed.
