I'm in the market for a new F150 and I'd like to get a fairly well-optioned Lariat. However, I have a travel trailer, so I need to be mindful of the payload capacity limitations of the Lariat. I've asked my sales guy what the capacity was of the Lariat in the link below and this is what he sent me. He said that he had to look at inventory in the entire country to find my exact truck so that he could get a VIN to look up the information. I can already tell that it wasn't the exact truck, since I didn't have the Max Trailer Tow package. Let's pretend that is the only difference. How much additional payload capacity do you guys estimate that I would gain if I omitted 4wd/FX4?

Thank you

I wouldn't think FX4 would add a whole lot, maybe a 100 lbs. I'm not sure what skid plates weigh, and the weight of the heavier shocks.

You have to remember that the more options you add the lower the payload will be, that's why the XLT has such a higher payload.

What's the weight of your travel trailer?

After looking at your selections again, I see the difference in payload. PowerBoost (Lariat) vs EcoBoost (XLT). The PowerBoost is much heavier with the batteries and onboard power, which takes away from payload.

The weight difference of the heavier shocks and skid plates of the FX4 is really going to be negligible, the skid plates are pretty much junk and may add 15 to 20 lb. If that
Max Tow is nice but it comes with the heavier rear axle, extra leaf per pack and 36 gallon fuel tank so those alone could probably deduct 200 lb from your payload if you didn't have them.

Between the two trucks you show the XLT has the heavy duty payload package and the lariat has the base payload, there's 500 lb difference in GVWR between those two packages. 7350 vs 7850.. then as mentioned the lariat also has a power boost so you have batteries, cabling and an electric motor that deduct from your payload.

The XLT HDPP has higher payloads than a lot of Super Duty builds. My 21 F250 Lariat Powerstroke only had 2100 lbs payload. XLT HDPP are around 2600+.
Forget the Powerboost if you are worried about payload.

If you want more bells and whistles, you may want to consider a Lariat F250 or 350 with the Godzilla motor.

Keep the replies coming. I'm aware of the reasons for the different payload capacities. The Lariat is the truck that I want, even if I have to lose 4wd. The XLT is the truck that I may end up with if I can't make the Lariat (w/ my desired options) work. Does anyone have an idea on how much I'll gain by eliminating 4wd?

It's going to be hard to tell you anything since you've given almost nothing on details of what you want or need in the truck. Saying that you want it "well optioned" it's very subjective. You don't even list the engine you want. Maybe spend some time reviewing the towing guide, look through the 5 other threads on payload capacity/stickers, and then provide some additional details on what you are actually looking for.

To answer in generalities based on reading/watching a gazillion vids/web sites...

If your trailer is over say 7000lbs and you do NOT have any interest in the PowerBoost function for powering your trailer, then you should probably be looking at a Super Duty (F-250, etc).

PB is not avail in SD. But most all the other trims, and features are avail.

Do you have a ballpark payload you are trying to hit? My 22 Lariat SCREW 502A 156" has a 1600 lb payload. It's got the 3.5EB, moonroof, max tow.

The Pro Power on Board 7.2kW option ($750) on the Powerboost is a real game changer when you are out with a travel trailer! You have 30 Amp RV Park type power wherever you go!

You can get a very respectable payload with a reasonably well optioned Powerboost.

Off the top of my head, here are some of the options I avoided to keep payload up:
  • HDPP
  • Max Tow Package
  • Moonroof
  • FX4
  • Power Tailgate
  • Power Running Boards
  • 20" Wheels
  • B&O Unleashed
  • Spray-in Bedliner

You probably already know, but if you want tow mirrors you need to order them separately. They are NOT included in any of the tow packages.

HDPP isn't available in the Lariat. I wish it was. The XLT is the highest trim with the HDPP and it increases payload a lot. XLTs are showing 2600 lbs payload with HDPP.
