I’m new to forum posting and to EV world (2023 Lariat Lightning ER, tow package, received last week).

I live in Big Sky (and big space between charging stations) Montana, and following a series of unfortunate events returning from a maiden voyage found myself high and dry on the edge of my home town. I called roadside assistance at FordPass to get a tow to a nearby charge station. Despite several tow companies within a couple of miles of me, they dispatched a company from an hour away, whose tow truck got lost apparently and didn’t arrive for 3 hours.

When he arrived, the driver insisted that he knew how to jump start me, and proceeded to pull the plastic panel off the left side of my frunk and connect jumper cables from his tow truck 12V battery to the +/- on the lithium battery. My newbie EV spidey sense said I didn’t think that would work, but since he had been dispatched by Ford, who presumably vetted who they sent to help new Lightning owners, I let him go. After about 5 minutes of charging I tried to start my truck, as would be normal for a ICE truck, but nothing. I then had him stop his charging and instead tow me to the nearest charge station (I know I know, should have done that first), and all seemed fine after that.

My question: should I be concerned that his 5 minutes of trying to boost my lithium battery with his truck battery might have damaged my lithium ion battery? And if so, who should I contact? I already complained to Ford about the 3 hour wait and the apparently incompetent person they sent, and I contacted my dealer but they just said that the jump was the wrong thing to do but they didn’t know if it would have caused any damage.

Thoughts? Thanks.

Why would it cause damage? Those are the jump posts, not the battery anyway.

If you were unable to get the truck into neutral for loading onto the tow truck, then I could see the need to jump the 12v. Otherwise, my understanding is the HVB ( the lithium one ) is physically separated until the truck is turned on.

The manual provides a specific sequence of connecting the jumper cables. I have no idea why FORD thought it would be so important to follow the sequence, but perhaps it is ....

LOL if he was able to access the high voltage lithium battery, you'd get to see a pretty fireworks show as the cable leads arc and his 12v battery explodes. :)
