I was wondering if anyone had troubleshoot this; some ice got into my charge port and lvl 3 charging hasn’t worked since yesterday. I got a hairdryer to melt and blow the water out and I see no signs of moisture anywhere on the charging port. All of the pins are intact, there are no signs of anything melted, no signs of anything burnt, thermoplastic caps are on and intact, and all pins are straight and intact. I have confirmed with several level three super chargers, it won’t work with multiple Tesla (250kW and 325kW) and Electrify America chargers. I also made sure that there is either money in the account and the cards used were not expired. What is strange though is level one and level two work just fine. Level one worked just fine after using the hairdryer to dry up any moisture; I have tried multiple level two chargers, all different brands, and all of them are successful.
I’m in Virginia and currently everything is frozen over, it’s currently 16° with a 35 mph windchill that makes it feel like 7°F. However, it’s been colder earlier in the week and had no issue. I have been plugging in my mobile charger at a 120 V outlet and have left it plugged in overnight and precondition the the battery before I had to leave anywhere. Even this cold at 120 V, the preconditioning was still successful and was barwly below the middle line on the battery temperature gauge. Whenever I left anywhere, I had 100% power capability available in the battery and have been averaging 2.2 miles per kilowatt - everything is operating as expected and even slightly better considering the cold.
This issue appeared after taking it through a car wash when it was around 20° or 25° Fahrenheit outside. I was driving and my whole driver side got covered in slush when I was running errands from someone skidding out on the slush. When I made a stop and got out my truck, there was a foul stench attached to this stuff. It’s sort of smelt like a dead animal in the snow, like if it was a dead skunk in fermented cabbage kind of stink. I took it through a touchless car wash and dried up any remaining moisture, I did the best with my charging port, but realized ice got in there when I tried to level three charge later that day. I need to emphasize that this was the type of smell where you are gagging and dry heaving, it was BAAAD! The car wash attendant took several steps back while covering his nose and just pointed for me to go through the automated wash.
The symptom is a red light being illuminated on the lock button with the charging port, solid red light with no blinking. What is strange is that I get no other fault symbols, no notifications, or anything that is stated in the manual. There are no service alerts, no messages saying what it is, no specific icons coming on my dashboard, and the only thing that has changed is the pitch of the beeping of when you start the car, or when you don’t have your seatbelt on, but I have read that pitch is appearing when it is as cold as it is outside. The only other time something like this happened was when I first got the truck last July and tried charging at Tesla superchargers that were only for Tesla cars. I was new to the whole set up and did not realize that about those specific Tesla chargers. But the same fault action appears, plugging it in with a solid red light around the lock button, no blinking, and a message in my Ford app that says charging error detected, unplug and plug back in again, and contact help if issue persist.
The reading I have done is telling me that moisture and ice is somewhere to indicate a fault for DC charging and preventing it from fast charging because this fault is telling the system that it is too cold to accept that level of voltage or that it is making it think that there is still moisture present and not allowing it to fast charge. I am working on getting compressed air and cleaning supplies for the port, I am getting lint free microfiber swabs (specifically shaped for charge ports), and 99% isopropyl alcohol to swab any dirt or debris away (this was on the recommendation of the Mach-E forums with 91% isopropyl alcohol. The important thing is to use a cleaner that leaves no residue and figured 99% would be better.) I have a service appointment on Wednesday to also take care of the 25C69 recall order and will notify them of this. I have also read to try and reset the 12 V battery but it is way too cold outside to comfortably do that and I have read different methods on how to do it but wanna make sure I do it correctly and prevent any further issues.
I’m going to try and fast charge again later tonight and see if the issue persists. I’m going to leave in my 120 V charger until then; as of this writing, I have preconditioned the car twice (once to finish at 9am - which took 2 hours, and the second precondition started at 11am, set for 12pm but finished at 12:17.) I currently at 71%, charging at 1.2kW but assume the kW and miles added are inaccurate, it’s been all over since the last app update.
Ford support is currently closed and opens up tomorrow at 9 AM and I will give them a call then, any help would be greatly appreciated and if anyone can also refer me to a great reading source, that would be helpful. would someone also be able to refer me how to reset the 12 V battery?
