I came to the same conclusion.

BTW, back in the early 80's before grad school, I worked at Bell Labs Piscataway for Western Electric, and our system was Unix on a VAX mini.

I learned to do some C programming and so forth though I was more of a hardware guy.

We had a game on the system called Rogue that occupied a lot of free time, lol.

And every Friday around noon, someone would run a program to eat up all the memory space and we'd have to go home early!

What fun.

I cut my teeth with an old VAX system I somehow got ahold of when I was a teen. I had been programming steadily through the late 80’s and early 90’s on a good old Commodore 64. Queue late 90’s and I really cut my teeth on HPUX, IRIX, SunOS. Good times.

I have had both the HIS, and I now have the Sigenergy system (I wrote the thread linked previously). You will definitely want to spend more money and get the Sigenergy system. It works on multiple EV's too. It does need at least one battery for home backup function (for black start), but trust that you would want that anyway so the truck doesn't have to be always plugged in. You don't need to have solar either, and can add it later. The installation is about half of what you need to do for the Ford HIS as well.
To answer one of your questions, the Ford HIS is for off-grid only. Except for a couple pilot programs that have never progressed much, there is no way to use it on grid. The FCSP has to lose power to even try using the truck as backup. Sigenergy on the other hand works seamlessly with the truck, even while on-grid to only use the truck on a time of use schedule or even on demand.
The Sigenergy system is amazing. The HIS is not. Again I have owned and installed both. I actually gave away my Ford HIS components for free, because I couldn't bring myself to charge someone for it.

I appreciate the info you have shared on this system. I have a really great electrician here who understands the hows and whys of this kind of install. I know I need to get a quote, but what kind of cost ballpark am I looking at for just hardware with no solar and a single dark start battery for this Sigenergy system?

You might have to shop around distributors (from their website), but you would be looking at $8-$9k for the 4 compnents most likely.
You would want the Load Hub (transfer switch), Energy Controller (inverter), 1 battery (6 or 9 kWh options) and the V2X module.
From there you could just add solar modules, and/or more batteries.

I had a TRS-80 Model III (Radio Shack) back in the late 70's and there was even a version of UNIX for that little thing eventually.

With a max of 48k memory (with the upgrade from 16k) it had its limits, ha!

Was software written better in those days or is it just me?
