Should I avoid a used ‘22?

My ‘22 Lariat ER was purchased July 2022 and now has 62k miles. It is easily the best vehicle I have ever owned. It was expensive, but based on my plan to keep it 10 years I should break even if not come out ahead. The value of this trick is unmatched.

I’ve had the standard recalls and the rear lightbar replaced under warranty, but other than those few things it’s been rock solid. Car Scanner even reports my battery is still 100%, though I do find that slightly hard to believe.

I would buy it again in a heartbeat which is probably the best endorsement I can give. Ford knows how to build a truck and it shows with the Lightning.

Well I keep seeing people with modules being replaced. What happens to the truck when these go bad? Does the truck just die or will it still operate?

7500 total miles / 6-month period of 50 days in service: Ford corporate bought back my '23 Lariat ER for full price. I bought a new '23 Pro ER for $10k+ off/0% interest - 40+ days in service recently - may be another Ford repurchase. Planning for a Max Range 460 miles - '25/'26 Silverado EV.

that sounds like it has been a terrible experience. I hope that at a slightly higher mileage, issues relating to build quality might have already shown themselves. I did take a Silverado EV out twice for a test drive. I tried to love it. The range is phenomenal, but that’s it. I hated the drive, the look, the lack of features on the work truck. I think every basic EV should come standard with seat and steering wheel heaters.

The usual symptom of a battery module(s) failure is the yellow wrench of death icon appears just below and to the right of the speedometer. A warning message appears warning to service the vehicle soon, and when plugged in to charge all the lights around the charging light circle turn red At that point you will be limited to the range remaining on the battery.

Once the dealer has diagnosed the problem, it usually takes 1-2 weeks to order the replacement module and install it (them).

The good news is the battery is warranted for 8 years/100,000 miles. Once the dealer has diagnosed that problem, you are entitled to a free loaner until your truck is replaired. Ford in the CSP estimated that about 4% of all 22-23 Lightnings will suffer one or more battery module failures. I have had two modules fail on two separate occasions. There is a report by one forum member that he had three modules fail, all at the same time.

The bad news is Ford will not sell you an extended warranty that covers the battery beyond the original warranty.

The WT is the low-end trim experience that you experienced - try the RST - LT - or Trail Boss or the line on the GMC side. 460 is a true range too v. the inflated '320' Lightning.

I’ve been looking at these trucks since the beginning, never bit the bullet to buy one, just too pricey for me here in Canada. Now the used prices are coming down. I’m looking again. I found an ad for a private sale, for a 2022 silver XLT ER, in Canada Includes the 312 package and has max tow, pro power 9.8, electric tailgate, etc. Sounds like a one owner vehicle, currently 88,000 km. Price is very tempting at 49,900 Canadian ($36,500 USD). . I would post the link, but the ad is in French, it indicates a tonneau cover, line X bedliner, and Nokias all-terrain tires, and makes mention of an extended high voltage battery warranty to 10 years 200,000 km. Not sure about what that warranty represents and if it is a manufacturer or an aftermarket one. I’m going to reach out for some more details, Wondering what thoughts are around a relatively higher, mileage, lighting, probably out of basic warranty at this point. I would hope that the owner has the gremlins sorted, but maybe getting rid of it because of problems. I’ll make sure there is a service history to look at and I would get a dealer to do a pre-purchase inspection before considering it , any thoughts?

I'm the guy that has driven a 2022 F-150 Lightning Lariat to over~139,000 miles. If you inspect the truck, including getting an ODB reader and get the battery health (and it is 98% or over), I believe that price is a bargain. Take it to the Ford Dealer and get them to tell if the recalls\updates have been done. Everything else is standard truck buying procedures. Ford has literally fixed everything under warranty\recall for my truck except for replacing the 12v battery and windshield.

I cannot advocate more strongly than for the 2022 model Lightning. It has saved me tens of thousands of dollars in fuel, maintenance, and time.

I only have one caveat. If you cannot charge at home AND don't have a fast charger nearby (within 5 or 10 minutes of driving), I would think long and hard before I bought an electric vehicle. For the Great White North, you really do need to have the truck on at least a 120v plug so the battery doesn't cold soak at night.

Well, so far no response from the seller. As far as the market goes, it is the lowest priced XLT ER that I’ve seen anywhere in Canada; even given the relatively higher mileage either it is a good deal or there is a backstory. I could get a new ‘25 standard range XLT in mid 60’s, a ‘23 used Lariat ER with 50k kms for high 60’s, and seeing some 22 Platinums for around 70. (all Canadian dollars). Sorry for the depreciation on these for the original buyers. My looking has been at $50k and what the best bang for the buck would be there. If I could find something that still has bumper to bumper warranty, I could then slap on a Granger extended Ford warranty, which they’ll sell to me with a relative’s US address and is supposedly good in both Canada and US.

I too have a ‘22 Lariat ER. I believe these have features that newer models don’t. The only real trouble I had was mouse damage to some wires. Now I keep it treated with peppermint oil and had Honda capuscion tape applied too. It is quieter than my Tesla and has a great standard equipment radio.

I’m a very happy camper.

I had an ant problem. I had to keep the concrete around the truck sprayed.

I bought my ‘22 Lariat ER in August, 2023. It was formerly a dealership mannequin with 5,000 miles on it when I acquired it. It now has 25,000 miles. The only issue I have had with mine is that two battery modules modules failed, one at 11,000 miles and the second at 22,000 miles. Other than having the two modules replaced, the truck has been relatively trouble free. And like many others, I love driving it. It is a very comfortable vehicle to drive.

Ford is standing behind these trucks. I don't care if a part fails, mass production isn't perfect. What I do care about is how Ford handles getting it repaired and back on the road. I have had pretty good overall experience with it. Can't say it was perfect but it was certainly good enough.

You'll get warnings long before it leaves you on the side of the road. In fact for my module replacement, Ford reached out to me to tell me a replacement was needed.

At 54,680 mi (88,000km) at $36,000USD sounds like about the right price to me, assuming the body and interior are in good shape, no accidents, etc.

As others have noted some of the '22 had battery module failures, and tail light leakage, but not all of them, and this one still has years (8 yrs from original delivery date) and miles left on the battery warranty (100k-54680=45,320mi = 72,934km).

Test drive it, get the service and repair history, check the car fax, have an inspection, check on the ford web site with the vin for any recalls or Customer Service Program updates/repairs, and have a sales document for the seller to sign attesting that he has made a full disclosure to you of any known defects if you think it is wise.

Some localities have lemon laws that are not applicable to used cars - lemon laws can be effective should there be major issues that are not getting resolved in a timely manner by the manufacturer and or seller (if a company/dealership but not a private party).

Remember, caveat emptor (buyer beware - that is, it is you responsibility to check the item for quality before buying).
