Sort-of universal. It won't open a number of doors that the Homelink module on our Model Y has no problem with. On the other hand, we had to buy the Homelink module for the Tesla, while Ford threw theirs in for free.
In this context, “universal” means not tied to a single brand. It won’t work on my brother in law’s 1983 Sears opener, either. ?

I have an old Genie garage door opener. I haven't gotten my truck or read the manual yet. Several years ago, I got a Meross garage door remote on Amazon to interface with the Genie. It just creates a parallel circuit to trip the opener mechanism. Everything else about the Genie functions as it was. The only problem I've had is getting boluxed up by the changeover between my phone going totally cellular out of the house vs. still having the phone barely clinging to the home Wi-Fi network. Other than that, the Meross remote has worked great. You can get notifications when anyone (like my wife) opens the door, if the door has been up longer than your set open time, you can have the door automatically close at a time of day, etc. Tell whether your door has been opened while away in Canada, etc. Works great with Android and iOS. Can be commanded to open and close via Alexa with a passcode set, or ask Alexa whether the door is open or closed, etc. You basically wire it into your Genie opener, duct tape the Meross circuit wire to the top of the opener support rail, put a magnet detector at the end of the rail above the top of the door, and then tape a magnet to the top of your garage door. And, voila! I've been waiting for the magnet to fall off of the top of the garage door, but it hasn't yet several years later. If one can pin phone apps to the truck screen, the Meross app is going to be at the top of the list. I have the outside garage lights hooked up to TP-Link switches as well. The exact model may have changed since I got it in March 2021: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084Z5QZR2/ Perhaps this is low tech compared to what some of the rest of you are doing but it works for me.

P.S. The reason I got this is that I'm a late-to-rise retiree. My wife still works and leaves for work, not fully awake, at the crack of dawn. There was one too-long stretch where about once a month, I'd get these calls, "Honey, I think I might have left the garage door open! Would you check?!" So, I was looking for a cheap solution where I wouldn't have to get out of bed, walk the length of the house, disarm the security alarm, unlock the door to the garage, then redo everything, and trundle back to bed. The point was to give HER the Meross app so she could remotely check on garage door status and close it herself if she found it open. And I'd get to keep snoozing away.

Oh...my...cow. I finally got Homelink programmed. I'm not confident I can repeat it, but maybe this info will be helpful.
I have an Overhead Door Odessy 1000. Basically new-ish with 3 buttons on the motor.
You follow the Ford instructions to the point of holding the remote & homelink button until the homelink light rapidly flashes.
Then refer to your garage door opener manual to put it in learning mode. For me it was: Press square (PRM) button until both LEDs light up. Release and 1 LED still lit. Short press of square button and a purple flashing LED. Then I pressed the homelink button for 2 seconds multiple times. About the 4th time it worked.
So much fun.
