Underbody Aero Covers?

I've been thinking about removing the running boards on my lightning but didn't want the ugly black cover showing. I decided to look into it and saw nothing so I took the passenger side off and sure enough there's nothing behind it. I figured it was protecting something but now I presume it's some sort of aero cover?

Anyone have anything further on it's purpose?

I wondered what was under those also, but hadn't had a chance to look.
I might cut some slits in them to discourage rodent infestation.

I found a large rock on the driver side when I took it off. Who knows how it go there. There are holes in it I presume to allow water to drain and they are open on top.

Splash shield or just aero. There's some wiring/lines under the right side but not enough to require the tub. And, a splash guard wouldn't need to be a rounded tub.
