Steam and Electricity powered most cars early on, until the internal combustion engine, along with ready-to-purchase gasoline, made them a little less desirable for long-range driving needs...
Ladies, especially, liked the early Electric models because, after all, there was no noisy and dangerous steam and having to 'make a fire', and no 'cranking over' the front of the car on early engine vehicles... the electric models were QUIET and EASY, just get in a go. Not far, but go.

I had no idea about the electric cars in the 1800s. Steam isn't surprising but batteries then didn't seems feasible.

The only other option at the time was dealing with horses. Horses require fuel and maintenance even when you're not using them.
