Wonder how many additional power stations are going to be needed to support widespread electric charging as envisaged by this plan. Electric cars still need fossil fuels to get charged, or hydro or atomic power.

Good luck with that! This country has a 50-70 year old energy grid. People in major cities can't run air conditioners in summer. More fantasies from DC!
Thank you for your FUD. The vast majority of EVs are charged during low-demand hours once or twice a week. We'll be ok, even without the grid balancing and demand management that V2G and smart EVSEs allow.

We can do it with wind, solar, and improvements to the transmission grid. It’s happening right now. Fastest and cheapest way to build out our grid capacity and electrify everything. Not just cars but heating, cooking, industrial processes. Ten years and we’ll be there. Exciting times! We’re finally using our amazing brains and technology to build something real, rather than just a brand new “better” social media app.

Mine does. If this is for a future when ICE vehicles are not being sold to control travel through electricity rationing and you have to make your own gasoline or diesel, you’ll be scaveninging to keep vehicles going? Seems scavenging for EVs would work too since that’s what the world will be using. Plenty of parts, and fewer moving parts for EVs.
Good thing we are all cookie cutter people and all have the same likes! You must live in the city where people think they are the center of the universe.

In the last 10 years our population has increased by over 20 million people. Our Grid and power demand has barely been able to keep up with that growth alone, as realized with issues this year, in California and Texas. That does not include the introduction of EV’s at the rates suggest by our Government. I’m not drinking their Kool-aid and will plan to support my own energy requirements. I hope others can/will do the same.

AC chargers are slower and they get SUPER HOT when you increase the power.
Don't get that at my home charger which is L2 AC. The charger for AC is in the car.

The Chademo/CCS adapter being discussed (someone thought they were AC and said they charged at L2 levels) is DC and limited to 50kW due to the Chademo.

Absolutely, all rooftop solar here since 2014. I think you’re correct about the grid in its current state, but I’m sure we as a society will put a lot of effort into improving it over the next few years. We really need, and will achieve, both: a better grid *and* individual rooftop production. The two can go hand in hand, I hope. We’ll see!

Sorry folks... what "we want to be" and "what IS" hasn't merged yet.
Actually it probably has merged for 90% of usage. Problem with the F150EV is going to be supplying the huge demand. I'm sure Ford has a stat on how many buyers are coming from ICE F150's where the EV pickup can replace an ICE pickup.

And the timer we're on is measured in fires, hurricanes, floods, crop failures, fish kills, dead rivers and lakes, dead oceans, burned over forests not range and charging stations.

If our financial and drive situation can work with an EV, we have a duty to the social contract to make it work. Get our individual green house gas emissions reduced by 90% from our 2000 selves.

House - Solar powered 30% reduction to 0
Car - EV 30% reduction to 0
Boat - New engine 65% reduction from 2008 engine.

Only emissions I have now are the boat and already talking to the yard about going electric. Replacing the 68 gallon fuel tank with a 60 kWh battery and 150HP electric motor.

If you live in the mid Atlantic and upper midwest, electricity generation and distribution are not major concerns. With the demise of energy intensive heavy industry over the past 50 years, there is adequate electricity (and natural gas powered turbine generators) to power EV’s. Old nukes and coal fired units have been shut down with no possibility of starting back up.
I have no agenda for owning a Lightning other than I think it will be a good replacement for my old F150.

That's Great!!

You deserve a pat on the back from us all. And I mean that sincerely!

I remember the days of changing my oil and dumping my old oil in the forest.
As much as I NOW KNOW that was a "bad" thing to do... the Forest is still there and thriving!

However...

My electrical grid supplier has me living through "rolling blackouts" and "public safety power shut downs".

I HAVE TO GET TO WORK!

I can't be waking up in the morning to find a dead battery in my Cybertruck ...I mean "Lightning" and calling my boss to tell him "I won't showing up for work today".

My home is powered by Geothermal and Wind. NIETHER are "ready" to replace fossil fuels. They will be someday... but I live in the "now"!

Plus... I'm already paying a $75.00 FINE every month for "going over my allotted power consumption.”

So I’m doing "my part”!
Albeit by FORCE!

BTW... I'M DYING to get an Electric Boat motor beyond my trolling motor! They're right around the corner... I'm sure. My electric weed eater KICKS ASS!!

Just from myself. Gotta sleep at night.

My comment was more to idea that "EV's aren't there yet" but they really are as far as practicality. Looking at F150, I'd guess 90% of F150 owners would have 90% of their usage covered by the Lightning.

Idea that the grid is an issue is not real world. Even the worst in the US, the TX grid which has no backup for natural gas power plants, makes EV's viable for 90% of light pickup and autos. US grid overall is 99.995%.

Real issues are cost ($15k more) and availability.

On availability, wonder how many EV's are scheduled to be sold in '22 in US, close to 1M vs. 17M needed.

Tesla 400,000 in US
Ford 200,000 MachE and F150's
VW 30,000 ID4's
Audi 20,000 various
Kia/Hyundai 100,000
Others 100,000

The other issue that people miss is the time period during the day when people actually charge EV's - the vast majority of charging is at low grid usage times - at night. The ONLY time I charge my EVs during the day is on road trips, which for most people is less than 5% of usage. In most places the grid is already set for nearly 100% EV conversion if that were to happen, which it will not for a very long time - because most people will NOT be charging at charging stations.

This is what non-EV drivers do not get - and is why all the fuss exists at the national level about building a lot of charging stations and bigger electricity infrastructure, much of which will not be needed. There is a misperception that we somehow need to replace gas stations with charging capacity. We do not. Owning an EV is no different than owning a cell phone or smart watch. You plug it in as part of your daily routine and you always start the day with a figurative full tank. I have my EVs set for slow charging to preserve the battery because, why not have it take ten or twelve hours to charge at 24 amps instead of the 60 amps that it CAN charge at in 3.5 hours?

All EVs allow you to set the start and stop time for charging and all EVs allow you to set the charging rate (speed or amps). I set mine to begin at 8PM and charge slower than it otherwise would. If we need it to charge faster for some specific use, I just use the phone app or car screen to increase the amps to maximum, and it finishes faster. Downrating the amps (charging speed) is only possible on Level 2 charging, not when Supercharging (DCFC) which always runs at the maximum handshake level for the car and the specific charging pylon that it is hooked up to.
