Driving after dark comes with serious risks. According to the NSC, fatal crashes peak between 8:00 and 11:59 PM in the spring and summer months (Source: NSC).

The NHTSA reports that in the U.S., even though only about 25% of driving happens in the dark, 49% of passenger vehicle fatalities occur at night. This means the fatality rate per mile is roughly three times higher at night than during the day (Source: NHTSA).

šŸš— If you can’t control the lighting or other drivers’ risky behavior, there’s another option: recording the road. Having that footage can provide strong protection, preserving evidence in case of an accident and helping ensure accountability.

To capture clear footage at night, the F17 Elite is the world’s first dash cam designed to record in ultra-color 24/7. The 4K front camera and 2.5K rear camera both support dual HDR and feature STARVIS 2 image enhancement. The cabin camera uses innovative technology to capture colors that look like daylight, even in low light conditions.

We’re now offering 40% off the F17 Elite!

LOL. I read this as "HALF of all fatal crashes happen during HALF of the 24 hour cycle."

Well. Yeah.

Well. Yeah.
I was thinking, so 51% happen during the day? Sounds like, technically, it’s more dangerous during the day….

Some 83% or more of all driving occurs during the day... An even split of fatal accidents between day and night means night driving is quite a bit more dangerous.

Um, unless I'm reading it wrong from 8pm to 11:59 pm is NOT half of the 24 hr cycle.
Hence the " This means the fatality rate per mile is roughly three times higher at night than during the day"

........and this is one of the many reasons the Sunshine Protection Act needs to be passed and signed into law. Standard Time needs to go away permanently.

Eh, I actually like the change. I'm happy with the way it is, myself. Has been this way nearly my whole life, or as long as it has meant anything to me...

Isn't 8PM to midnight when deer often go out for a walk? Shouldn't we be marketing the cameras to them?

Also not taken into consideration is that most heavy drinking probably occurs in the evening or at night. So, will better lighting help you if you're DWI or about to be hit by a DWI driver?
  • Specifically, in 2022:
    • ~32% of drivers in fatal crashes at night were alcohol-impaired. Crash Stats
    • ~11% of drivers in fatal crashes during the day were alcohol‐impaired. Crash Stats
[*][*]Also, overall among alcohol-impaired crashes (fatal), about 69% occurred in ā€œdarkā€ conditions, versus ~27% in daylight (plus a small fraction in dawn or dusk) in 2022.
Um, unless I'm reading it wrong from 8pm to 11:59 pm is NOT half of the 24 hr cycle.
Hence the " This means the fatality rate per mile is roughly three times higher at night than during the day"
See the Crash Stats PDF link above. The rate of fatal alcohol-related crashes is 3x higher at night than during the day.

Are you suggesting that deer is often drunk when it gets hit?

The humor is delightful, Maxx, but a very small % of fatal accidents involve deer, probably less than 1% of all fatal accidents (but some may escape being tabulated as deer-related, e.g., someone swerved to avoid a deer, but the deer was not recorded as the initiating cause).

Another thing about the OP's post is that person does not reveal that the 49%/51% figure appears to be from 2005 statistics. That was ~20 years ago. Perhaps with LED headlights and intelligent beaming, most modern cars have better nighttime vision than 20 years ago... Hopefully, highway and street lighting is being continuously improved, too....

My Lightning certainly has better nighttime headlighting than any vehicle I've ever driven before.

ā€˜In addition, the sales pitch is counting on the assumption that we all think if an accident does happen, the A-hole must be the other guy so having a footage of the incident is definitely good for us. The fact is, this ain’t lake Wobegon and we can’t all be above average.

p.s. Your statistics must have been provided by humans. My dear deer scientist told me 80%-90% of deer crashes do end in fatality (close to 2 million a year):

Perhaps you jokingly mean that 80% to 90% of deer-related crashes end in fatality for the deer (although I understand there are no good statistics on what happens to the deer involved):

Key numbers

What percentages do these represent

From the data above:

  • Fatalities among people:
    4402,000,000=0.022%\frac{440}{2,000,000} = 0.022\%2,000,000440=0.022%
  • Injuries among people:
    59,0002,000,000=2.95%\frac{59,000}{2,000,000} = 2.95\%2,000,00059,000=2.95%

So roughly 0.02–0.03% of deer-vehicle collisions result in human deaths, and ~3% result in human injuries. Most (ā‰ˆ 97%) result in property damage only (or very minor/no human physical injury).
Another guesstimate from a different source on what happens to the deer:

Deer Fatalities:
The percentage of deer fatalities in these collisions is the opposite. While precise data isn't available, it's widely accepted that the deer involved in a crash almost always die. Therefore, the fatality rate for deer is very close to 100%.
