I lived through this with my old Saab. Not only did they stop making that model, the entire company went out of business. All dealers closed. And yet I was still able to get parts for many years.

I had to replace an auxiliary coolant pump recently... On my 11-year old Chevrolet Volt - new GM OEM part too.

I am aware of a few components that if failed, it would be fatal to my car - but that's besides the point regarding parts availability for the Lightning.

I hate to break the news to you but close to 55% of the US now consumes their news from social media videos so it's already here. Take a guess of the 55% how much of that is Youtube......85%.

I really have no idea why it matters how you consume your news; whether you watch it or read it, it doesn’t make a difference.
Sometimes video information is a lot easier to assimilate and learn from, like YouTube video instructions on "How to [fill in the blank]."

As far as news goes, well, with AI and deep fakes, have to do some fact checking before accepting it as true, but then, same with things read in newspapers and books.

My grandmother once told me when I was about 4 years old "don't believe everything you read."

There is quite a bit of rewriting history, alternative facts, etc. going around lately - I feel like I am in Bizarro World some days:

it is so exhausting going round and round this pair of mulberry bushes over and over - this "gripe" and the 12v battery "problem."

here is a massively over simplified summary:
-cars get cancelled and production ceases, it happens; this case is no different. There are already laws about this that govern parts supplies. Plus, Ford has already addressed this "hysteria" saying there will be parts and software support for at least 10 years going forward.

-ICE cars have a 12v battery to support auxiliary systems that run off electricity, which battery also tended to die after a lot of use and/or several years. The ICE cars did weird things as a signal when the 12v was heading towards death/needing replacement, which weird things EVs also do too, but in a similar but different way. The 12v one in your EV serves the same purpose and the application is the same so there is no problem, no design flaw, no issue with the battery itself. There is really no difference between the two in terms of general function except for a smaller margin for error in the EV context when the battery is on the verge of giving up the ghost. If the 12v gets old and tired because your truck is about 3 or 4 years old, or if it is behaving erratically doing weird things and the weird things seem to be getting more frequent, just replace the battery and call it a day.

can we just move on from this now?

I just got a new cooling loop compressor on Tuesday.

Parts will be available, not the first vehicle to be shelved.
Do you happen to have the part # in which you had replaced? My dealer has just diagnosed that my 22 Platnium needs the compressor (YCC690/19703) that cools the battery @ a cool price of $3500 Cad in parts

Yes it is, @ 87000km. I just bought it 2 months ago! As of now it is looking like a bill of approx. $6000 Cad including diagnostics. I was just about to make a new post asking for advice actually as I haven't found any posts with replacing this compressor that apparently cools the battery

Ok so mine wasn't the first one to fail! Can you tell me about your experience? My parts quote alone is $4000 ($2770 for the Compressor) not incl. the labour which he hasn't quoted me yet. After 5 hours of troubleshooting the tech traced it to the compressor with an error code: EV Battery Pack A Isolation Fault. I am just worried whether this is my issue or not also (I'm not sure how versed my dealer is with EV's)

I cringe as I see the day where people would rather watch a video than read a post/article draws ever nearer each day. This is definitely old news for people 'in the know' but can also appreciate Tom using his reach to spread the word in a more digestable way.

I keep getting asked questions by other drivers on the same topic. Response is to ask them about whatever older car they are currently driving and see if they're still able to get parts/service. Just a bunch of rabblerousers trying to get some reaction out of an EV driver imo.

On the flip side, saw that Ford is rumored to be planning on bringing back a cheaper sedan of all things. Kneejerk reaction to the current fuel prices/general affordability no doubt.
If a transcript is available, I look at it before the video. A 17 minute video like the one Tom did I can scan (not read) in a few minutes to see if it's worth watching. This one isn't. I love my Lightning and it will be the last vehicle I ever own.

thanks for this snappy response!

In Canada, the Ford F-150 Lightning's high-voltage battery and electric unique components are covered for 8 years or 160,000 kilometres (whichever comes first).

I was getting at the below, wondering why a compressor that cools the battery wouldn't fall within this warranty and the time period?

High‑voltage battery assembly
  • Battery pack enclosure and internal modules
  • Battery Energy Control Module (BECM)
  • Thermal management hardware directly tied to the pack
  • Defects that cause failure or excessive capacity loss (>30%) within the warranty period
but I guess you've already had them answer that and provide an explanation? @rhoemer33 ? I guess the compressor just broke and gave up the ghost, which sucks.

either way, a sour development that hopefully doesn't ruin everything for you after only 2 months.

That's exactly what I thought, how can it not be covered under the Battery warranty if it cools the battery!! My advisor searched the part number (Compressor Assembly YCC-690) and it came back with no coverage. I called Ford Canada and they said the same thing. I am going to call again right now and see if I can talk to someone higher up or with a specific EV team.
That's exactly where I'm at!! I was very excited to finally get into a Lightning but with such an expensive repair after only driving it 6000km has left me very uneasy about the decision. Tks for the reply

Ford Canada just quoted the Warranty Guide: HVB Assembly, BEC, BECM, on-board charger, ISC, DC/DC converter, and eDrive. No mention of the Compressor that cools the battery! SOL
