I'm starting to learn about Battery Energy Storage (BES) systems and solar, etc. I was wondering if anyone is using a Grizzl-e club charger to charge an external battery system....

thoughts?

I'd like to charge at night (low rates) and get the charging rebate from Grizzl-e ... basically charging for free.... and then use the energy during the day.

What you are calling a charger is an EVSE, basically a glorified smart switch. It cannot charge an external battery directly.

The charger is in the vehicle.

When I bought my EcoFlow BES systems, they sent me a couple of adapters which port the J1772 style connection to the proprietary infinity-port, I've never used them to charge my BES systems for the purpose of load shifting.

We don't have TOU rate schedules here, so no incentive to go through the motions

So you can charge a large power bank from the outlets in the truck and then bring them inside your house to run devices. I'm pretty sure that this is not the intent of the programs or legislation and it will eventually be caught and stopped.

Yes, that's what I was looking for....but something more generic. thanks for the reply.

Don't see why not it's not possible. EVSE is a power delivery system but relies on the destination system to manage the power input. It would be no different than having a battery bank hooked up to an inverter to draw power from the grid during your low price times and feed your house during high price times. Only difference is that you want to take advantage of the credits you get from the Grizzl-e club membership. As long as there's no clause in the TOS against this, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

Youtube channel, Technology Connections, did a video about a year ago when he modified a garage heater to take a J1772 plug input:

Might be a good place to start but I think with the system you're looking into, you'll need a few extra items inbetween as well.

I wasn't looking for pretty sure ... but you're right:

Under the rules of Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR), the credits generated by your Grizzl-E charger are strictly reserved for electric vehicles. Pumping electricity from your Level 2 EV charger into a custom stack of server-rack LiFePO4 batteries for a home energy storage system violates the terms of the program.

Here is why it is explicitly limited to EVs:

The CFR Mandate is for Transportation
The federal carbon credit system, specifically Compliance Category 3, generates value by rewarding end-use fuel switching exclusively in the transportation sector. The entire premise of the payout is that the electricity dispensed is actively displacing fossil fuels that would otherwise be burned on the road. Stationary home batteries do not displace transportation fossil fuels.

So I have no plans on committing fraud. But...if you run your house on your truck.... you'd technically be doing that if you used the program.

Interesting....guess we aren't allowed to do that either.

yeah very cool -- but ESA wouldn't pass it and I'd need that pass for insurance.... looks like the best bet is to charge the batteries like the EVs during ultra-low rate times.... for me that's $0.039 per kwh.

Depends why you want batteries.

If you want battery storage for a power outage, sure.

If you think that charging batteries during low rate periods to then power your house during high rate periods makes sense, you probably need to do calculations on conversion loss, etc. to see that it probably doesn't.

Sounds like you're looking at the former.

Yes, there will be losses from:
1) the home AC to the Truck Battery via the Grizzl-e EVSE, maybe as much as 5% to 10% depending, and
2) from the truck battery to the PPOB outlet because of the losses of the on-board DC-AC inversion process.

Would avoid the legal repercussions involved with the rebate being for 'transportation' only?
Probably not if someone catches on, you are violating the spirit of the program by gaming the system.

I would not want to be the person who gets caught doing that...it's called the free-rider problem in economics, and there is way too much of that already in the world.

You could abuse it, but please don't. I think that would fall under killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

I've already said I won't -- this place is so risky to ask a question because you can really get pounced on.

Sorry if it seemed like pouncing...and don't take stuff too personally on the forum, for the most part, people are of good will here I believe, there are a couple 'cranks' but no one takes them seriously for very long..sometime people think I am a crank because I believe in adhering to the electrical codes, well I can't help that I am an EE and an attorney. :)
