That’s because your MagicBoxes are the host of the CarPlay instance, bypassing the Ford hosted implementation…..

Again, this is a Ford problem. You bypassed the Ford Sync system and magically the problem is solved.
No, didn't bypass anything, sync4 thinks an iPhone is plugged in. My family has literally watched hundreds of hours of video. Zero restrictions.

lol. I guess I just run Android Auto all the time, and don't really have any issues with the Sync system--except for the AWFUL slow speed/lag it has, especially at startup. Other than that, it does what I need it to do without being to unnecessarily fancy.

I exclusively use a CarLinKit magic box device, response is near perfect, and I can literally do anything a phone can do at any time.

Exactly, that’s because the MagicBox fools the Sync system into thinking it’s a phone, yet it’s actually acting as the infotainment host for the CarPlay instance on your phone.

Remember CarPlay as we know it is 100% run by your phone. Your vehicle infotainment or in this case the MagicBox acts as a mirrors or a basic framework of parameters like screen size, orientation, car communications, and OEM options selected.

Do you use a MagicBox with a Lightning? If so is Apple Maps able to get an SoC? If not, that’s how you know the Sync system is not actually the mirror for your CarPlay system.

This. There is a setting and I don't remember where it is that allows some minor changes but it's been years since I looked and may have been reverted since cuz I didn't find it on skimming. It was right around the time when Apple was pushing driving focus.

You're correct, in my understanding of SYNC4 is that with carplay and Android Auto it is simply functioning as an LCD touch screen.

It's up to the phone what to restrict and when. Of course the phone gets a signal from the vehicle to know when it's moving. But the phone decides to block features. That's why some apps give more functionality than others. Depending on the app developers.

Partially true. Developers of CarPlay apps must use Apple-provided screen templates. Which is why lists and keyboards are automatically restricted when in motion.

Wonderful! So we are in agreement that Ford’s framework is what’s preventing keyboard usage while in motion. 🍻

I'd like one edit here, it doesn't think it's a 'phone' it's just a dumb screen projector at this point. The box never sends the actual phone the command to disable the keyboard, thus you get full keyboard access, as well as any other disabled functions. Is the box intentionally designed that way or is it poor programming? You be the judge.

In theory, it could still do this, all it has to do is not send the UI restriction state command but send everything else.

No, I think I'm saying the actual opposite. SYNC4 sends parameters to the phone like battery, state of charge, speed, efficiency etc, makes sense. There would be one in there that says "in motion" or the phone could just look at the speed. Regardless, it's the phone saying what gets restricted. That's why you can plug in any magic box device and get unrestricted functionality. Because the restrictions have nothing to do with Ford.

Ultimately it's up to the iphone, you immediately know this because it's apple's keyboard that pops up in the display and not Ford's. Once in motion Sync sends a command to the projected device to disable distracting elements. It is up to the device to comply. The iPhone in this case is no longer Sync's projected device, it's the box, it is also a screen projection device, and it doesn't send the command to the iPhone and in essence, doesn't comply with Sync's command.

Do they though? Again, you putting a 3rd party device in the middle of the chain which is impacting this restriction. However this restriction isn’t present in all vehicles. So, while your phone makes the choice to restrict the keyboard in motion, it seems to be based on the vehicle telling the phone whether or not it’s in motion.

So we’re back to some manufacturers are choosing not to tell the iPhone when it’s in motion. Yes?

I do iPhone/Mac programming as a hobby, I was never on that side of the fence. 😂

Edit: Damn, I missed a wide open opportunity with walled garden....

Hey Siri, play Buy Me a Boat on Amazon Music
or
Press and Hold the voice command button on steering wheel to trigger the voice assistant of the connected smartphone

works great unless all my kids are battling for the song they want played and talking at the same time 🤦
