$500+ roof racks vs. $30 Home Depot rent a truck...guess it depends on whether one is constantly using the racks or not.

I am surprised it's so hard to find roof rack and cross bars like my wife has on her Chrysler Town and Country. The roof rack bars have the cross bars mounted along the length of the roof rack. To carry something you swing the cross bars 90 degrees and screw down. The closed position offers less wind resistance which I am sure is a worry with Lightnings.
I doubt the bars from a junked Chrysler Town and Country would work well since the van is so much narrower than the pickup.

Lightning is an F-150. Many products exist for F-150s. Truck has a bed. You can add a tonneau cover and protect things in the bed. You can add a rack system with or without tonneau.

35 Years ago I made a roof rack that I just found in my garage. The plan is to clean and paint the brackets and 2x2 bars which still seem good. I don't know where to find the brackets but they seem very simple and I recall it was very cheap to build the rack and very sturdy/reliable when I mounted them carefully on various cars. Also I had 2 ways of attaching the hooks - directly on the bracket or to the cross bar. Just need to make sure the hooks are tight and at the correct angel.
Obviously it's for temporary use when carrying a load. Wind resistance would affect mpge.
