I came across a bridge that had a 3 ton weight limit and didn't think anything of it before I crossed it.

It wasn't until after crossing that I remembered my SR XLT weighs 6000 pounds and change not including me and all the gear I have in it. I have one of the lighter trims and definitely exceeded 3 tons.

An ER equipped lightning could easily push that to 3.5 tons. Just an FYI for others like me that haven't owned a truck or vehicle this heavy before.

Out here lots of the streets are tagged 3 ton limit. Not that the street can't support 3 tons, it's they don't want commercial traffic driving down those residential and commercial business district streets.

Some cities enforce it, some don't.

My 23 Platinum with a fiberglass cap was just about 7,500. With myself, and my son in it.

Did it say 3 tons was the limit, or PER AXLE limit? I often see the latter.

That said, the bridge will not collapse if something crossing it exceeds it by a pound. The limit means, if the limit is observed and the bridge is properly maintained, it will not collapse for its expected lifetime.

The point where collapse is pretty much immediate may be if the posted limit is exceeded by 100% or some other figure. Though exceeding it by, say, 20% won't bring it down immediately, but will stress it and weaken it. It might take a dozen 20% overweight crossings before collapse, but by the time you've crossed three or four times without any issues, you will be complacent about thinking it's OK. Until it isn't.

BTW, when dropping junk off at the local site where they weigh you going in and out, the empty (with two adults) weight was 3060 kg (6746 lbs) for our 2023 Lariat SR.

I’ve made many trips to the county dump and even with minimal stuff in the bed my ‘23 SR is at 6800 lbs crossing over the certified scale. I’ve also seen 8400 when completely loaded up with trees down from a recent hurricane. i got a few looks when I showed up with that load.

It was a fairly small sign. No bigger than a speed limit sign. Just said "Limit 3 Tons". So I'm not sure but that's interesting. Did not know that.

Good to know about the bridge's dynamics. I wasn't worried about taking down the bridge or anything. 😁 But who knows maybe in certainly areas you could get a citation or something. 🤷‍♂️

Ultimately I'm trying to be a considerate user of the road. These bridges are rare around my area so I don't mind taking a detour.

Here is my truck weight more or less “empty”:

I took some stuff in to recycle and had him snap a photo of the weight of the truck without me in it, (if you look closely, you can see the digital scale weight in the picture -LOL)there was a deWalt hammer drill and a couple related items in the frunk and ratchet straps and related under the rear seat. So <3.5 tons with me in it.
23 lariat ER, max tow, etc.

To remove the speculation and data for the thread:

2022 Lariat ER: Actual CAT scale weight is 7140 with a 200lb driver. Just a tad over 3.5 tons

We are in Ontario Canada where they issue Green Vehicle license plates (beginning with either "GV" or "VE" if you want the French version).

There's no extra cost for this, and frankly the only privilege it gives you is to be able to use an HOV lane when driving alone. When we picked up the Lightning, our salesman warned us we could have an issue because the ownership indicated a 3000 kg vehicle weight and there was a 3000 kg limit for green plated vehicles.

For the benefit of others in Ontario: this is not exactly true. Our law says that commercial vehicles up to 3000 kg may have green plates. My wife's Lightning is a personal vehicle that is not used for any business purposes, so the green plates are fine despite the vehicle's weight.

hmmmm,, does that mean my 'truck' ? pulling my camper ? nope.

here are the actual 'rules':

Who Has to Stop at an Inspection Station?

Vans,
Trailers AND
Any vehicles carrying agricultural, horticultural or livestock products

Who Does NOT Have to Stop?
The following vehicles can bypass inspection:

-Private passenger automobiles with no trailer in tow,
Travel trailers,
Camping vehicles,
Van conversions,
Motor homes AND

Pickup trucks that have visible access to the entire cargo area and are not carrying agricultural, horticultural or livestock products now, try to 'figure' all that out WHILE you are in the process of passing 'by' this signage... and before the blue lights come on!

Georgia's HOV and Hot Lane 'rules' for EVs extend to those with 'special' EV Plates, although, I will argue, if pulled over, that my LIGHTNING's special '240 V' plate is 'special', and I paid dearly for it, and it should then be considered an EV 'special' plate by the state, and the authorities : )
(I think they mean an actual 'special' "EV" plate, charged for $300... oh well)
