I haven't noticed that before, but I went out and power on -> auto, manually switched to off, powered off truck, powered back on and it was back to auto. Will add that to the list of things to be on the lookout for, thanks for the suggestion! The rotary headlight switch on our trucks has been known to go bad. Mine glitches every once in awhile. I did have it turn the headlights on (change itself from "auto" to "on") by itself, but I think I was driving at the time.
Take a look at the headlight switch. It has LEDs to indicate which mode it's set to. If the truck is on but none of the LEDs are on, that's a sign of a bad switch. I rotated the switch and the indicator lights started working again and it went back into "auto."
Sometimes on the instrument panel display the brightness window will pop up, and I think it's the headlight switch (that has the controls for dash brightness) glitching and thinking I pressed a button on it.
There is a service bulletin for the switch on the Mach-Es. Not one on the Lightning even though the switch is the same/similar. I think it's used on other Ford vehicles as well.
