I charged to 100% and my Lightning said 379 miles!

I rarely charge to 100%. I have it set to 80% standard, but I was planning on a long trip, so I topped it full. (I also read it’s good for the battery to do this from time to time.)

When I started my trip in the morning, I was surprised to see my truck say I had 379 miles of range! In the past, when I have charged to 100%, I have seen it say up to 340 miles.

Has something changed with the way the battery calculates range?

I use a Ford Pro Charging station and have an extended range battery.

It didn't drop that fast. I don't think I actually get 379 but it didn't drop that quick either (I expected it too). I was surprised.

Nothing's changed that I'm aware of. It's basing it off your driving habits, and it's nice and warm out so it's giving you a bigger number. Would be nice though...

When you know it's not right, just reset the driving history.

Why reset driving history? Just ignore it altogether. I wish they would just get rid of it, it's meaningless. Nobody has ever benefited from knowing how far the truck thinks they could have gone yesterday. If you drive super slow one day and it says 370, then get on the expressway, you aren't going anywhere near 370 (if driving highway speeds).

I know it's beaten to death, but man, I don't know why people care about that number. The only one that matters is battery percentage.

I agree completely but they should show current efficiency alongside battery percentage. I keep the current trip tile pulled up on my center screen so I can calculate on my own how far I can actually go.

Agreed, I would rather see efficiency more, and maybe an estimated efficiency based on weather might be cool, although that will still have variables based on speed.

I should also mention, I think the distance to dead is useful if used with the nav system where it takes into account speed and elevation and that along a projected route. That is at least trying to use previous data plus a plan for future driving to calculate distance so you can figure out charging stops.

It's the distance to dead number in a vacuum, like it shows in FordPass, that I think should just go away. All it seems to do is make people panic in the winter and maybe be overly confident in the summer.

Imagine someone that doesn't know better seeing the distance estimate OP is seeing and planning some 320 mile trip and thinking they don't need a charging stop so they just take the fastest route Google Maps give them. They are about 250 mile into it and the truck gives them a 10% battery warning and they are nowhere near a DCFC.

Too late but this weekend I am taking a long trip and will keep an eye on it.

I have been messing with the GOM over the last few days too.

My thoughts

The GOM uses a short term rolling average, maybe 5 or 10 minutes. But, above 80% it starts adding a bias to make the range appear more optimistic (or uses the previous average from the typically slow driving the few miles before home).

I just observed my GOM actually INCREASE in range when going from 55mph roads to 35mph roads. I also observed the GOM dramatically slow its loss when turning off HVAC.
