I've driven across Saddle Road a few times in a Model Y. Very cool route!

Did he climb up Mauna Kea or one of the other volcanoes; thus requiring a cooling stop? Saddle Road from east to west (Hilo to Kona respectively) does gradually rise and then drops as you approach Kona. Interestingly, it is entering into Kona that nets the most amount of regen as opposed to going down Mauna Kea itself (which is at a greater descent rate).

My 8500 Pound boat and trailer was towed far better than with my King Ranch

So would not be able to make the round trip if you actually wanted to go fishing without charging before returning home. This was a one way trip and he used 76% of his charge. There are almost no even level 2 chargers in Kona or anywhere in between to hilo. You are lucky to find a 50Kw chargers at the electric company HQ in Kona that you might be able to pull through.
