I've been watching battery and EV technology for some time. Batteries because they're super important for spacecraft and EVs because I'm a geek about EVs. China is about 20 years ahead of the US w.r.t. battery tech and 10 years ahead on EV tech. And we're falling further behind every day.

In five or ten years, we'll still be making gussied-up Model-As and the rest of the world will be driving spaceships on wheels.

Yeah, I try to keep up with tech in general and now that I have a BEV and installed solar with a powerwall 3 I especially try to keep up with both of those.

Wow!
That is painful to watch, she tries hard!
Very interesting if that information is correct, but the way they are expanding into Mexico and other countries they will probably make it. It is unfortunate that Chinese companies are using shell games and screwing their suppliers. If I had bigger kahunas, I would short BYD in the stock market, but the risk is probably too great!

Jennifer is difficult to understand at times, but the information is trustworthy {IMHO}

Joe is echoing the same POV

Thanks for the videos. They were interesting and seemed to make sense, though as a resident of the Pacific Rim, I found Joe's accent a little difficult to understand. :p

Isn't consolidation in an emerging market a perfectly normal occurrence? It is rough on those who bet on the companies that turn out to be less successful, but it (ideally) leads to the best surviving and better performance in the long run. (Except Betamax.) Who remembers the early personal computer landscape, and how many of those companies went under?

On a related note, I've just spent a couple of weeks in Thailand, where Chinese (mostly) EVs are entering the market in large numbers -- and good thing, given their serious air quality problem. The Thai government seems to be demanding that companies which sell EVs in their country assemble a portion of them (50%, to be increased over time) within the country.

Also related: a popular model of pickup in Thailand is...the Ranger. I'm told that they're considered desirable luxury vehicles, with the Raptor trim being especially popular, even in the Bangkok urban area (population: ~10 million). The one pictured below is about the plainest one I saw.

When competitors are dumping underpriced models, making something that people want more and are willing to pay for can be an effective way to survive until the dumpers' bubbles burst. If these videos are correct, that may happen pretty soon.

Except that the companies that survive may not be the best, just those that have the most money or are able to screw their suppliers over the most or who have the most access to capital! That is how monopolies are formed and it is not good in general for future innovation!
