So I used to think there wouldn’t be much of a difference between a Tesla V3 Supercharger and a beefy CCS1 DC fast charger but wow was I wrong.
I had the opportunity to charge at an Ionna 400kW today and damn do they rip. I was able to charge from 20% to 80% in 35 minutes, holding 124kW all the way to 80%. This charger was also totally exposed and in direct sunlight yet the cable and charging socket didn’t feel warm at all.
Conversely my last few V3 Supercharger sessions were less than stellar. I had one session where charging derated to under 100kW in less than 20 minutes. I suspect the charger cable and/or the A2Z adapter was a large part of the derate as both were toasty.
I’ve been going to Superchargers because they are abundant and seem to be less expensive but I’m starting to think it’s worth paying slightly more to use a beefy CCS1 DCFC.
