I have a hybrid solar system - generally 'off-grid' until winter when local utility charges my stationary ESS battery system overnight at very very low ToU rates.
For back up power, say during a winter utility outage, when little solar potential is available, I have two options for reserve power: the Lightning or a fuel generator.
In both cases I find it simpler and safer to use the back up source (Truck or Genny) to power a DC charger that re-charges the main stationary ESS battery. This avoids a lot of complexity, since the loads and solar can operate normally, oblivious to what the back up system is doing.
I use an EG4 Chargeverter that accepts AC source (lightning or Genny) and outputs 48v DC to my stationary battery bank. This DC charger is programable to stop charging when the ESS is 100% charged.
The "cost" is lower efficiency - due to AC-DC conversion from Genny, and DC-AC-DC conversion from the Lightning, however the frequency of a major utility outage during low solar potential is quite rare, so I accept the trade off of lower efficiency for higher simplicity & safety.

A very simple and SAFE way to do it. Completely avoids issues of AC power control / phasing / etc.
