A few weeks ago, I was on a road trip and decided to stop and top off my truck at an EVGo charging station so I would have plenty of juice for my return trip.

At the station, I got a red ring on the charge meter, and I could not get it to charge. I still had a decent amount of range so I kept on going. A while later, I decided to try a different station. I tried both an Electrify America and a Tesla and every time I got the red ring of death and no charge.

Thank goodness I had just enough range to get home, but I was nervous. It was a Sunday so no dealer would be open to provide assistance.

When I got home, I tried charging on my charger - also with no luck. At least I was home and had enough miles in the morning to get to my local Ford dealer if needed.

I checked with ChatGPT, and it recommended turning off the car, locking with the FOB and letting it power down for 10 minutes. I tried it and it seemed to reset - I was able to charge on my charger as normal. I haven't had need or time to try another station but I'm afraid of this error again.

Soon I have to take a road trip where I will absolutely have to charge on the road. Does anybody have any experience with this? Did my fix solve the problem and if it happens again, I can solve it with the same trick. Or did the EvGo station just cause a one-time glitch?

You're living on the edge. I would want to know what DTC codes were set and I'd want a battery (BECM) health report. Most real battery issues you will not be able to charge again until a module is replaced.

If you could charge again, there are others that report issues like that which don't come back and they are OK.

Thanks I also read that there are known issues with EvGo chargers.

Today I am going to do a remote test charge and see if it gives me any trouble so I have time to get to a dealer for a deeper look before my trip.

I had this happen to me once in a Tesla station. The issue was that you have to follow the procedure step by step and don’t rush things or do them out of order. I turned everything off and waited for a minute or two before I re engaged. It worked. That also was pretty early when the Fords got access to the Supercharging network and used the Tesla supplied adaptor.
Never have seen The Ring of Death since then. Of course, you need to monitor and if it comes up again, a visit to the dealer will be advised.

I had exactly the same experience at an EVgo charge. I tried a Tesla charger but same problem. I drove to a dealer and the reset they system and everything has been fine. They said the EVgo charger caused the problem.

that’s what chatGPT said too. And resetting as per it’s instructions worked but I need to test an EA or Tesla charger before hitting the road!

If you send me your VIN I can check in OASIS if there were any codes stored.

In your case, since it affected both DCFC and L2 charging, I expect the charge controller may have needed some time in OFF mode to process an update. In many cases, the updates do not require immobilization and the updates are applied shortly after ON but require a long enough OFF cycle to complete the update. This problem was more common in 2022 and 2023, but I know there was an OTA updating the charge modules distributed over the last couple of months.
Hopefully, all will work as normal on your test.
