The only purpose of that plate was HOV lane access and virtue signaling.

It also lets first responders know there's an EV battery to worry about. We have one on our XC90 PHEV with it's very modest 18kWh battery. I don't like how it looks either, been thinking about getting a vet plate.

Devil's advocate: If the first responder EV battery thing was critical, they wouldn't let us change away from it. Firefighters are largely not stupid (some of them are however batshit crazy - I basically grew up in a firehouse) and they know what they're looking at, even when it's crumpled up or scattered all over the road.

A fact for which I am very glad (my brother is a paramedic and volunteer firefighter). Just wanted to point out there is an additional benefit (albeit a very small one). Some vehicles are more easily identifiable as EV than others, especially when there's an ICE and a PHEV version. Anything that can help them out I'm generally ok with.
