Wish my wife had not pushed for the Lariat trim with sunroof...most of what I have heard regarding Ford sunroofs is not positive....I love the sunroof...I do not look forward to the problems.

If I could have bought the extended battery without the sunroof even for the same 10K more then I would have. It was crazy they tried to force me to get a sunroof I would never open and worry about leaking one day.

^^^. I totally agree. My F-450 Platinum had Powered Moon Roof as a $1,495 option. I always order vehicles without moonroof if it’s available like that.

Here in Florida they just add potential for leaks and increase the heat gain when parked, even with the sun shade.

Did you have it done at the dealer and what did they charge for that?
It was done at the dealer for both my Lightning and my Volvo (both have the pano sunroofs). The Volvo dealer charged one hour of labor while the Ford dealer did not charge. The note for the Lighting was that the drains were checked and were clear - presumably meaning that no action was required.

Gotcha. I can’t imagine it’s too terribly difficult to do at home but I’m gonna look into it.

Random thought, if the dealer can't get mine fixed how stupid of an idea would it be to just cover the roof and sunroof with a single large piece of paint protection film? I wouldn't be able to open it (not planning to anyways), but it should stop any leak!

It’s probably not a bad idea in theory but I’m not sure how the PPF would adhere to the glass and the rubber weather stripping. You might talk with an installer and see what they say. I’d be worried it would end up lifting and blowing off but it may work.

My understanding is that the rear drains can be a challenge due to limited access. For me, it’s not worth the hassle - especially since I do not have the tools or resources to do it efficiently.

I gotcha. Totally understand. Did they explain how they cleared those drainage holes? Wonder if they just blew them out with high pressure air

I opened mine when it was new an vowed never to open it again. Same with the back window. I wanted a lariat with the big battery and thats what I had to get.
I dont believe that never opening it will prevent any issues. Folks open them when driving so its unlikely the buildup is from dirt and dust getting in the drains at that time. The sunroof also isn't open when it rains, so the drains themselves are needed because water gets in when its closed. And if water gets in it carries stuff with it.

Best bet is to do the maintenance if you open it or not. Clean the drains, clean the seals and the metal, and condition the seals.

After that you might as well use it.

Actually now that I think about it, I think blowing those tubes out with high pressure air from a compressor could possibly cause the line to separate from the fitting/piping that carries the excess water out. That would suck if one of those liines popped off and the water ran straight down the A-pillar.
