More capitalism in the system seems like a good thing to me. If you are price sensitive you'll figure out when charging is cheaper. If you are time sensitive you'll be able to charge faster but you'll pay up for the privilege.

If course, what I said above matters not to the folks with lifetime free charging. Hard to put that horse back in the barn.

But then it isn't surge pricing. That would be time of use pricing. Surge would imply that demand increased.... Maybe the surge in surge pricing is just that. A surge in the price irrespective of demand.

I have no problem with surge pricing. All I care about is availability on the rare times when I need to use SC. If surge pricing gives me more availability I am all for it.

I feel the same way. In my 10+ years of EV ownership, I've rarely used DC Fast Charging, even when I had it for free for the first 2 years of Tesla ownership.

Granted, I don't normally do road trips. Our typical "longer distance trip" is the 125 miles from our house to our cabin. I charge at our home chargers at both ends. We do this trip almost 4 times a month

Even when I used DC Fast chargers, I only charged for maybe 10 minutes to top off when going to the bathroom.

They already vary price by time, all this seems to be saying is that rate variability by time is going to be dynamic and based on current usage rather than fixed as it has been but still netting out to the same average effective rate overall. Assuming that's what they actually do it's probably a good thing.
This. They are working baed on actual usage, not based on times as they have in the past.

Yeah, I am thinking about peak times. However, surge charging is a great thing. It will mostly impact people charging from 80 to 100 percent. The Lightning charging drops significantly at 80 percent charge. I normally stop charging at 80 percent.

I only dcfc while traveling away from home. I found a local free dcfc at the power company headquarters and gave charged there when my daughter is at dance class (10-15 minutes there and back, an hour in total to kill). The dcfc is 120kW and limited to 300 amp. I'll take whichever EV needs the charge the most. When traveling I stop at 80 percent unless it is overnight and I want a nap.

I live in your corridor as well., Drive Bay Area to Grass Valley weekly.

As a 24 Flash F150 owner who drove Teslas (and for the most part was very happy - just got bored at the end of last year), Teslas superchargers are trustworthy and consistent. The fact that Ford swung a deal with Tesla for supercharge access was def a difference maker for me leaving Tesla and choosing my truck.

For certain, it used to be say .26 kWh and now they are up toward PGE peak pricing. So is EVGo. Just charged last week in Berkeley 8 out of 10 stalls avail and it was .57 kWh.

I try to charge at both ends at home, but you know you pay for what you get. Since 2016 i feel like i've seen less than 5 Tesla chargers with caution tape wrapped around them. Solid and worth it,
