It's on page 289 in manual version 1.1. Which I did not read because I don't have adaptive cruise. It's odd that the icon still does things (changes color) even without adaptive cruise.

Not odd at all…
lane-keeping (excerpt above) is a feature than can be used all the time, without ACC.
The icon indicates status of that system.
(Lane keeping is a completely separate section of the manual)

it has protected my truck’s distracted operator a couple times, from curbs and centerlines. Also serves as an attention getter, when the steering wheel moves in one’s hand .

I definitely agree (from another vehicle) that lane keeping, cross traffic, and pre-collision are invaluable.

it has its own icon because it’s an independent system, that can be turned on and off. Since it’s gonna make steering inputs, Ford wants us to see the status of the system.
Also works in conjunction with blind spot assist and blind spot assist with trailer coverage, for lane changes, if you use you blinkers. Try to make a lane change with a car in the other lane and it will nudge you back into your lane.

Lane Keeping is often confused with
Lane Centering.

Lane Centering is a function of lane keeping, when Adaptive Cruise Control is on.

With BlueCruise, Lane Keeping also provides Lane Positioning and Automatic Lane Change.

In Summary,

Lane keeping (when turned on) independently provides:
lane departure warning and corrective steering, plus
blind spot assist and blind spot assist with trailer coverage, for lane changes, if you use you blinkers.

Lane keeping w/ Adaptive Cruise control on provides:
Lane Centering

Lane keeping w/ BlueCruise provides:
Lane Positioning and Automatic Lane Change.
