That looks like it was a great course for testing the capabilities of the truck. Well done Ford.

For 99% of the population, this is more than enough capability.

Having said that, I've also been watching a bunch of the R1T videos and I don't think it hit me as to just how capable the R1T is until I saw this video for comparison.

I have no need for that type of off roading but definitely a realization/respect for that truck I didn't have before.

Nice review. Can the running boards be removed easily? They seem so unnecessary, easy to thrash, but perhaps my wife would need the step? Or maybe just get a folding stepstool that can be stored in the frunk?

I’m hoping the AMP power running boards will work on the lightning so they can retract easily. I would guess factory running boards are 8-10 bolts and maybe a wire if they are lit. Probably not difficult but definitely not something I’d wanna fo every week.

I remember seeing something saying that the running boards were designed for better aero.

And as a component of the 360 Lightning package.

What would be great is if the running boards were also designed as rock sliders for those who go off-roading.

I am pretty sure we will see third party sliders come out. If truth be told, most Lightnings will be pavement princesses, like 90% of trucks are. With only 9" of clearance I am not certain that the lightning is a real offroad star, like a Raptor or a Rivian. Granted, there will probably be kits out there to turn the lightning into a Raptor fairly soon.

Yup - mine will be a pavement princess. Still need a truck to haul things though.

Heck, I have even been considering a lowering kit to turn it into more of a street truck. Not sure if I will or not yet though.

Pavement princess here as well.

But, considering the trucks off road capabilities, I will 100% take it off road to maximize the value. Part of my selling point to the wife was it would make weekend excursions easier :). Nothing serious, but maybe just to get to a cool camp site or location otherwise inaccessible to a standard crossover.

My theory is the Lightning didn't get retractable running boards because the battery pack hangs down below the body line anyway, so there's no/not much benefit to retractable steps (and the steps do a nice job of hiding the battery pack).

Very possible. Best to wait until the truck is in hand for many aftermarket changes.

There's driving off road occasionally and then there is the hobbiest version of off roading.
