Guys it’s really simple honestly-

They want maintenance money. Dealerships are losing relevance as are salesmen- this is the only way they can keep overcharging you for maintenance. This is their bread and butter. It’s also gonna be their downfall as other companies continue to ditch useless dealerships and salesmen.

Damn I’m glad I got my actual EV lightning when I did. Absolutely love this thing and keeping it forever.
Exactly. The dealers killed the Lightning by not wanting to sell EVs.

This still leads to oil changes, maintenance, etc that those of us got away from with the Lightning.
AKA a reason why all dealers will probably sell this now vs the Lightning which still had many holdouts. They make their real money in the workshop, not from the sales floor.

Thank you for the news and info simultaneously released elsewhere.

I'm curious about the Lightning platform with this news.

Some inferences I'm getting
  • Lightning 400V platform will stick around. Meaning charging speeds won't get better.
  • Lightning is not getting a revamp with the Universal Platform (UEV)
  • There's about a 9 to 17 gal tank on the new Lightning. (700 miles-300 electric miles =400 miles. 400miles / 17 gal = 23 MPG. 400miles / 9 gal = 44 MPG.)

  • Does the battery news imply that both the future Lightning and MachE will get the prismatic LFP packs? NMC batteries go bye-bye due to cost.
  • Will the frunk be a kept feature?

My feedback for the EREV, which is probably already in consideration, is that power meter cannot drop while powered only with the generator. When that generator kicks in, folks are not going to be happy if the power meter shows 70% power available. That was a flaw of the BMW i3 that made me disinterested: low power/low speed when in generator-only mode.

How the generator interacts with the ProPower Onboard (aka camp/V2L mode) will be interesting. There's going to be some complexity to it. Could the generator kick on at 20% and charge up to the user set amount (say 80%)?
Would be an interesting camping feature to wake up to a full electric battery. Dangerous for a garage situation. Would also be useful for the V2H situations folks are finding themselves in, by buying some time to get gas before the tank runs out.

For our Lightning community here. We are going to be faced with an interesting nomenclature tagging question as we welcome the new members.

Do we have them tag their profiles with "2027 Lightning EREV"?

Do we current 2022-2025 owners tag our signatures with "202x Lightning BEV"?

I'm so angry right now. So f'ing angry.

The points I want to note...

1) People who have lightnings use them as trucks more than ICE customers do.

2) The Pro was - and still is - the vehicle that most people wanted.

3) PHEV is the wrong step.

4) What does the White House have on Ford?

Hopefully Rivian adds CarPlay before I need my next truck. Or Scout will still produce a pure BEV model. I still have both reserved.

I do not tow or drive long distances with my truck and never will. An EREV is completely pointless for me and I do not want it.

Over a decade of owning Ford Trucks and sounds like this will be my last. The only thing that gives me hope is Ford changes their plans as much as the wind changes directions so by the time I look for a new truck maybe T3 is back on the table.

Horrible news. Guess my 22 is my first and last Ford. I have zero interest in oil changes and fuel. A range extender taking up the frunk space that I use daily? No thanks.

I think you're seriously over estimating the size of the battery pack on the EREV... probably by 2x or so.

I didn't buy the Lightning to have my next truck be a step backwards.. this is silly and reactive. Shame on the United States for this crap.
It’s not the US. It’s the market. Unfortunately at this time people don’t want EVs in mass. I like the idea of letting the market decide. When the prices are right, and the time to charge shortens and you can tow a decent distance I think lots more people will go that way. I love my 23 ER. I won’t be getting rid of it anytime soon. In fact I don’t think I’d go back to a ICE vehicle. But there are others that think differently. The problem was we were creating a false market by incentivizing people to buy one using tax dollars. Believe we all pay for it. That money does not come out of thin air. The market will correct and we will see what comes of it.

I'm looking at this in a few ways, means I bought the very last year Lightning, might bring future value, (collector). I know I'm enjoying the hell out of it right now and I'll keep rolling till the wheels fall off, put em back on and roll some more. Hoping there will be some sort of advanced aftermarket support beyond 10 years.

I've been yanking wrenches for over 40 years as a career and I'm just about to fully retire, the last thing I want to do is have to maintain another gas engine (erev) that's not happening in my life time.

Mid size bev does sound appealing, it seems these trucks have grown over the years and I've had many. I'll keep my hopes that there will be a Lightning Jr. in there. ;)

Looking forward to seeing actual photos of this new skateboard line of vehicles.

Just bot my 2025 flash on Sep 30 and don't regret it. Will work for all my local needs up to 200 miles from now on at my present age of 73. If I make it to my 80's then it will be with this. No messing around with a gas engine in my old age except the wife's and other pickup. Still have the wife's vehicle for long trips if need be and she won't ever go electric. Still have my 2001 ford f150 at the farm if I really want a gas pickup to pull something. If I wanted a generator I've got one I can throw in back for a long trip if need be.

That said I saw this coming months ago. I am replacing a Prius which is the opposite hybrid and its not all that it was cracked up to be. Still haven't sold it yet but still plan to.

On another note, I can't tell but it looks like this new pickup is not going to be a full size f150 but some smaller Ranger type pickup and who wants that.

Not-Ai Brian, I greatly appreciate your involvement here and for you providing this update. I have my frustrations here but Fords involvement in the community is not one of them. As this is my first ford I can say that I am pleased with a lot of "behind the scenes" decisions Ford seems to make.

Good luck to Ford with the change in market direction. Disappointing, but understandable.

Fwiw, I think the Lightning was the next Mach-e but internal politics messed that up. By not getting the dealers behind it the death note was written. I firmly believe that was a policy problem, not a market one.
