You are also forgetting the use case for max towing uphill with a dead battery. To be successful, I think you need to support that without a significant loss in performance. That would put the generators max sustained output closer to 300kw (or 400hp)

That it have been the generator turn on with an extra 10-20 percent battery remaining so that the truck can eat into the buffer while running the generator at maximum output. Sorta like Chevy volt mountain mode. This would allow you to build up the battery soc prior to the long mountain climbs that the generator could not keep up with.

By full blown do you mean supercharged/turbo charged forced induction? If so, yes it will likely need to be a full blown inline 4/small v6 engine to maintain output once the battery is depleted. If not for ed induction it will be a V8.

No, it's just going to likely be a tuned version of a NA engine that will be optimized to run at certain RPMs depending on called for load for the generator. An ICE motor used for propulsion is far more inefficient than one used for generator use.

Something to consider, all this is if* the EREV is released. I'm not convinced it's forthcoming. Until there is the YT videos showing it, testing, etc. that companies usually throw out to the online world, it's just vaporware. No if, ands or buts...

Which comes first. Erev lightning or Farley being shown the door? 63 now so probably just trying to buy a couple more years.

Here is the reality. No matter how much you disagree or are angry, it won't change the facts.

1. EVs cost too much
2. Drivers still have range anxiety. That wont change till range gets higher.
3. Infrastructure severely lacks in certain places in this country and charging prices are too high.
4. If a product needs to be subsidized by the Gov't, it will fail.

EVs wont go away, but they will come back in the 2030s with better tech. This is my 2nd go around with the EV rise and fall. Been doing this over 20 years.

Boeing, intel, Amazon...some of the largest companies in the country get government money. Like Exxon and such (to help keep gas prices down as they argue). Gas companies turn out some of the largest profits. Bottom line is, corporate tax giveaway is about privatizing profit and subsidizing loss.

One has to keep in mind that EV sales are expected to come back to parity. Every EV maker expected a big increase before the tax credit ended and then a drop with eventual return to better sales.

If one were to take the argument that anything that requires government is a loser, one would be surprised on what would be on that list.

Finally just because some bots, oil companies and low information folks believe climate change is hoax and thus not worth the government involvement to help combat, doesn't mean we all feel that way.

I am not sure what to say other than Mr. Farley appears to be a very weak leader, who has been unable to improve vehicle quality, and who flips flops strategy and execution in response to the slightest shift in the direction of the wind.

Most obvious is how he choreographs his future failures now so he doesn’t have to take accountability later - instead he can point the finger. I have been listening to him for three years now, and he does a brilliant job of preparing everyone for upcoming failure [ “Chinese car companies are better”, “we are being forced to make non-gas cars”]

It was Ford’s decision years ago to stop making affordable cars (EVs were barely on the radar).

It was Ford’s decision to globalize supply chain, and in the case of aluminum, to be practically sole sourced.

It was Ford’s decision to announce a $40k Lightning and then sell only builds at $70k and up for a long time.

He's very good at pointing fingers. Maybe he's rigging his golden parachute for it's inevitable deployment when the board kicks him to the curb.

Riddle me this Batman... why was it exactly the same in the late 1800s and early 1900s, by actual records, before diesel trucks and interstate highways and aerosol cans and all the other things the tree huggers claim is ruining the planet? If we use records, and not assumptions, there is nothing new going on.

Because climate isn't weather.. and a hundred or two hundred years is a tiny data point in the millions of years we're actually talking about.

This attitude is very easy and convenient though.. you'll be long dead by the time anyone has to pay for anything you did.

Im trying to catch up on all the replies only 5 pages in so far... but is anyone else excited for the jailbreak/mods and possible future changes you could theoretically do to these lightnings...
once your out of service and drive it till the end (research over the past year has talked about the minimal battery degradation reports on lithium batteries).
Potential to upgrade the batteries as the tech evolves quickly.
Just trying to be positive. I truly feel this will add value/interest to these trucks over time. They will not just rot away.
Funny to think the original Lightning SVT 1st gen only lasted 3yrs as well

you can do that even without them killing off the model. lol

I think many missed this from the press release: "The first vehicle from the Universal EV Platform will be the fully connected midsize pickup truck assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant starting in 2027".

I didn't miss that at all. I have no interest in a midsize pickup from Ford, never have. I like the F-150 because it's big and the Lariat trim has just enough luxury features for my taste. Historically Ford's midsize trucks are lower end or entry level to keep costs down (even with the top trim packages). Maybe whatever they are cooking up will change that, but at the price points they are talking about, I doubt it.

If I had to buy a midsize and what I expect Ford's offering to be comes to pass, I'd rather buy a Rivian for the luxury/performance or a Cybertruck for the performance and self driving.

That said, you do infer a good point: we all have to evaluate what's available if/when we choose to replace our Lightnings. I like mine enough that I was willing to wait for the T3 to replace it, and at least for now, that is no longer an option.

I don't need any more details to know that I'm not interested in any of Ford's announced alternatives.

Your comment holds no weight, the fact is China is kicking the US butt 9 ways to Sunday. The US answer is to put a tariff on China to stop the competition. What a great idea but what else to expect from a Federal incompetent body of minds.

100%. The reality is like it or not, is the Chinese government allows for a long-term view of growth and strategy paving the way for businesses to plan accordingly. That being said they are by no means perfect and there is an over abundance of EV’s in China because of over production. But what that has allowed is a huge leap forward in technology.

The same progress can be seen in their energy industry, their navy/military complex, infrastructure, etc. Take for example their recent progress with thorium reactors. Technology, which is the US pioneered back in the 60s, but then just gave up on.

Chinese is kicking everybody’s ass and has been for a long time. We just don’t know it.

My take was in reply to a poster who was suggesting that EVs arent there because they are subsidized while ignoring how many things in this country are.

I am not advocating no government by any means. In fact I believe we need government to try and keep the playing field as level as possible. There are a multitude of reason we need a good robust federal government.

However for a good many the current state of affairs is what happens when that federal system falls into the wrong hands.

Unfettered capitalism is just as dangerous as a maleficent government.
