I have a 16 Pro Max which has been VERY reliable with CarPlay. I don’t think I’ve had a single connection issue.

What version of iOS are you running? Also when it won’t connect, have you looked to see what Bluetooth devices your phone is connected to at that time?

I have a 17 Pro Max (and a 16 Pro Max before) and I was having intermittent connectivity like yours last spring. Then I got a OTA update from Ford and it fixed the issue. It has been rock solid ever since.

Do you ever walk out of the truck with your phone in pocket with the truck still on? It will have trouble re- establishing CarPlay if you walk far enough away to disconnect, then walk back into range.

I’ve been battling this issue since 2022 in my platinum. I’ve had two new iPhones since then and the issue persists. PAAK is only an issue in that sometimes I have to actually open the ford app for the truck to sense I’m near and unlock. But CarPlay is reliably unreliable, most often is when you are making quick stops getting in and out of the truck. Then I disconnect the iPhone through the truck and reconnect, usually works, and if that doesn’t work you have to turn the truck off completely, leave the truck and come back in a couple minutes.

I should clarify that the PAAK works every time. It's the actual CarPlay that's finnicky.
This has been my experience too. iPhone 13 Pro, 23 Lariat. Whenever I toggle the phone's bluetooth off/on there is usually some collateral damage with other devices so I try to avoid it. I suspect the problem is with the truck and not the phone since every other BT device works reliably with my phone. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution or any other insights.

If you have walked away from the truck, and it has disconnected, when you walk back to the truck, it will not reconnect on its own.
The remedy, after you have walked back to the truck and are disconnected, before you put it in park and go, hit apps, Apple CarPlay, then hit the little button to reestablish contact. It takes about three seconds and you're good.

I have automatic updates on in the truck. How can you see what OTA updates you have and haven't received?

If the phone connects to carplay during the initial startup of the truck, it will always reconnect when I walk away from and back to the truck if I have left the truck on.

Try toggling bluetooth off and on in your phone and see if that reconnects you. Less steps vs doing it through the truck. It's been my bandaid solution to this so far.

That has never worked for me unfortunately.

I have searched this forum for suggestions on how to improve the wireless apple carplay experience. I have an iphone 17 pro max and a '23 Lariat 511a. Every 5 drives or so, my phone will not connect to the truck. The only thing that I've found to make it reconnect is turning the bluetooth on my phone off and on. After I do that, it'll connect automatically the next 5 or so drives, and then rinse and repeat.

I don't know if this is a phone or a truck issue. I had an aftermarket apple carplay head unit in my old car. I did notice that when upgrading from an iphone 14 to 17, the connectivity got worse. Is there any way to make the phone automatically turn the bluetooth off and on everytime it sees it's being used for PAAK? It's a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, but admittedly apple carplay was a big factor in going with this particular EV truck. I just don't know if this is a truck thing or a phone thing.
I have the same phone and truck — and the same issue. I consider it just one of the several weird glitches that occur at seemingly random moments. For example, I’ve cancelled the departure time warm-up option several times and, yet, now and then I get an alert in the morning that my truck is warmed up and ready to go. Why? Because tech…..

Are you certain of this?
Mine dos not. I had the same issue as you until it dawned on me that it only happened when I walked away and came back with the truck still on. Simply hitting a couple buttons on the infotainment has saved me much frustration.

I have the smaller screen, maybe they're different. At any rate- good luck!

That has been my experience so far. I'm sure it'll change now with my luck...

My ‘22 has been a crapshoot for CarPlay - sometimes the CarPlay connection fires up as fast as I’m able to press the OK button to return to sport mode, other times it will pop up 2-3 minutes into my drive, and on some I’ll even have the USB cable connected and my phone is recognized, but it requires me selecting CarPlay for my phone from the list. It’s seemingly random as to what it’s going to do on any given trip, but at least it’s not doing what it did previously, which was to connect but not relay any audio (I would have to reboot the infotainment unit to get it working), but an update last year fixed that.

TL;DR - wired, wireless… it doesn’t make a difference, the truck can just be temperamental.
