Anyone Have Trouble with Their A2Z adapter?

I was on a trip a while back and got charging errors (red ring) at any Tesla charger I went to, even one's I'd used before. I recently made another short trip to a site that had Tesla chargers I'd used before. I tried the A2Z adapter again and got the same result, red ring. I tried the free adapter Ford sent me on the same charger and it worked fine so I know the A2Z adapter is the source of the issue. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is there anything I can do or is the adapter trash?

Where'd you get the A2Z adapter? I know their first batch was recalled (as was Ford's) and they did not require anyone to send them back to A2Z to get a replacement, so a bunch of those first ones wound up on FB and ebay.

I bought it directly from A2Z. Order was actually delayed because they were waiting to send me one of the newer ones from the second batch. I used it a few times with no problems.

I had the same experience on a road trip last year with the typhoon pro (new style). Like you, luckily I had a spare. I contacted A2Z and they sent me a new one. I would assume that adapter is bad.

On note is some people have reported that an adapter (not specifically A2Z), must be plugged onto the NACS cable first and then connected to the truck, and some people report exactly the opposite. In my case, the first time I used my A2Z adapter, I connected the adapter to the NACS cable and then plugged it into the truck - got a failure. Disconnected and a moment later plugged the adapter into the truck and then plugs the NACS cable into the adapter and it worked. I have always done it that way from then on and never had a failure. I have never tried plugging into the cable first, so I don't know if the first time was a one off issue.

I usually do it that way. Tried it both ways this time and got the same failure. Thinking my adapter went bad on me.

It most likely did. If you contact A2Z customer support they might replace it for free if it’s still under warranty.

Fortunately there are far more CCS-1 options than there used to be, so you can get home.

Personally Tesla SuperChargers are my DCFC of choice when I am on a trip long enough to require it. This is because there are almost always stalls available, and with a Tesla Membership, usually less expensive than pretty much anything else (before someone says it, there are no Walmart nor IONNA around here - there will be one of these days).

If they won't replace it for free, get the Lectron version on Amazon, it's basically the same one Ford used with the latest vehicles. Looks identical to the one Ford gave me, only difference is the name stamped on it, Lectron made the ones Ford gave out iirc.

My Ford adaptor is the Tesla made one. I think they switched to the Lectron version about half way through their backlog of initial "free" adaptors.

@keith.springer A2Z has had good customer service in the past. I would try them first.

I used Tesla as well, but that trip, I had to resort to just using Electrify America since I didn't have my spare adapter with me.

Try plugging in the adaptor first to the truck’s port and then the NACS cable.
If that works then you’re all set. If it is not working then definitely A2Z will replace it for you. I had one of the first batch of adaptors also, which after a 6 month period of heavy supercharging failed during charging and high temperatures. A2Z replaced my adaptor, no questions asked, with the upgraded one.
It is customary to follow the Tesla instructions when you are using their Supercharging network and their adaptor.
In the past you have used the A2Z adaptor with no issues, but Tesla sometimes does things without any notice, and that maybe the reason your adaptor may not work.
I am certain that during the handshake, which may take up to a minute, the network does not recognize the adaptor as one of their own.
I keep an A2Z adaptor as a backup on both of my Lightning and Mach E vehicles.

I also heard that the mercedes chargers are great. All three of these providers are using the same Alpitronic Hyperchargers that seem to have hit the sweet spot of speed and reliability that we need.

I had the same issue with the Lectron version purchased from Ford. I ended up continuing on my trip and everything worked at the next Tesla supercharger. I did have another person at the charger mention they'd have issues getting the Tesla supercharger, and he mentioned sometimes he has to uninstall the app and reinstall it and it fixes it for him.
