One day I might test drive a cybertruck just to see what it’s like, but I just can’t get past the look of the thing.

Yes 4 wheel steering would have been a game changer. But I hear that Chevy did that in the early 2000's and it simply didn't sell well.
Funny story about that. In June 2003 I was looking for a full sized 4x4 pickup. Narrowed it down to a Ford, Chevy or Dodge Ram. While in the Chevy dealer, the fleet manager pulled a truck out so I could take a test drive. The truck had the 4 wheel steering and the truck was really buried in the lot. Would have been a GREAT opportunity to show off that feature. What was the first thing he did? Turned off the 4 wheel steering and had to back and forth about 15 times to get the truck out. He also absolutely insisted that On-Star was 100% satellite based and worked everywhere. Even after I pointed out that the position data was satellite, but the communication was cellular, he absolutely insisted I was wrong (I wasn't). Just wonderful when the customer knows more about the vehicle then the dealer...

BTW, the 4 wheel steering was about a $5K option.

rust spots...
Before that particular rumor starts spreading again, there never was a rust issue. Any time someone found rust on a Cybertruck, the cause was environmental iron contamination. Think along the lines of, very small iron particles from rail roads, etc. The "rust" cleaned right off.

There is a reason all full size trucks kind of look the same. Sure there is an engine so that is why the front is how it is, but the rest is for a lot of function. I think Tesla should have the Cybertruck, and I'm glad they created it, but they should have also released a normal looking truck at the same time. Make the bed exactly like Ford so parts could be interchanged (or Chevy, whatever, just a high volume company).
After my wife bought a Tesla, I could certainly see buying a Tesla truck if they copied a full size truck but keep the interior of a Tesla (also, her vehicle has a normal turn signal, so they are moving back).

I thought I would give you all my thoughts on having a Cybertruck for a couple of days again.

I do own a Lightning
It is butt ugly, no two ways about it. I hear someone's kid say it looks like a stainless steel refrigerator.

Quadrasteer

Yes The Cybertruck has had some issues, the A/B pillar's falling off, hubcaps falling off. Accelerater pedal rivet, The truck I just had didn't have that rivet, so they must have fixed it. The truck was nearly new with just 1300 miles on it. Wiper blade issues, rust spots... to name a few.
Some of the GM EV pickups currently have 4 wheel steering as an option.

It's the modern day AMC Pacer... Which sold very well. Then people realized how ugly they were.
As an AMC owner, that is an insult to the Pacer.

Good write up. Glad I’m not the only ones be who thought the backseat is too small. I’m only 6’0” but found the headroom and legroom lacking compared to the Lightning.

I’m sorry you’re getting swerved or key threats, but two things on that:
  1. In the pantheon of American politics, those people are likely left of liberals.
  2. Again, I don’t think this justifies wrecking your car, but Elon is a world-class piece of shit. He is a serial liar, DOGE was a catastrophe from every perspective including “saving money”, he’s working tirelessly to mainstream far-right and Nazi political views, and really I could go on and on. He really is that awful, and as I’ve said elsewhere I would not give him or his companies a dime if I could help it, regardless of how good the products are.

Yes the Ford does have a premium interior. But things you depend on like Phone as a Key, has failed me twice where it took me inputting the backup code several times before it would start. 12 volt battery system management. Speed assist picking up random 25 mile per hour speed limits on divided highways. The warning beeps going off with no apparent reason. I expect better from Ford.

It is hard for me to believe a Cybertruck experience would be worse than my Ford experience. Power train Malfunction 8 weeks to fix. 6 recalls (one for the misaligned electrode that took another 6 weeks to fix with no loaner) 2 customer satisfaction program fixes. Resulting in another 6 weeks of no truck.

Home Integration System that has only worked once as advertised.

Fogged headlight, that isn't fogged so much as to be covered by warranty.

I have a 23 Rivian, it has had one issue. Was fixed in 30 minutes as promised. I know I was taking a chance with the Rivian.

I had a 2015 Tesla S. It had less issues than my Ford in 8 years of ownership. Plus when it did have issues I was given a loaner. The dealership only had a loaner for me once out of the 3 long visits to the shop.

To be honest if it wasn't for the people on this forum. I wouldn't know what to do or expect. I hardly look at the Rivian Forum, and the posts there are very different from here. And yet, I will probably drive it till the wheels fall off.

I do have to say that this forum is actually very helpful; there are a lot of very knowledgeable and helpful drivers here. They have made my experience a lot better. I never got any help from the Tesla "community" when I had my model 3. But to be fair, most of the Model 3 problems I had were quality or service problems, not things that a community could fix.

I had one for a weekend, while our Model Y was in the shop getting a leak fixed in the lift gate. I loved it, being able to whip into a parking spot at Walmart was 100x better than in the lightning. That 4 wheel steering is something else. My wife even says how much easier it was to drive than the lightning. It was big, but drove like a much smaller truck. It was back in May of '25 and there was still some Tesla/Cybertruck hate going on. I did get flipped off twice. My response was to just blow them a kiss.

When my lease is up, I may consider it depending on what the next evolution of the lightning looks like. But the Scout truck also has me interested too.

Check your insurance. I pay 1/3 of what a Cybertruck would have cost me, $604 a year for my 2024 Lightning vs $1958 for the Cybertrruck.
