Hey all,
Has anyone converted their older HVAC system in their lighting to a heat pump? I am looking for diy resources.

No, because it would involve software changes that could not be made. Insane to try this.

My thoughts:

- Is it possible? Yes, with enough time, money, and resources anything is possible. Likely would require taking the entire truck apart and rebuilding it.

- You would NEVER recoup the cost of doing this. There's not enough gain in efficiency to ever offset the cost. In all seriousness, it would be cheaper to sell your current truck at a loss and buy a new one with the heat pump.

- I have never heard even a whisper of someone looking into this.

Has anyone seen a comparison done between a heat pump equipped Lightning vs one without? I haven’t yet but I recall when the heat pump versions came out some people complained the cabin heat in winter was weaker. Not sure if this is true or not either.

I don't think there's any difference in the way the 22-23 and 24-25 handle this, but with the heatpump system in the 24-25 since it's providing the heat, you can't do AC-linked de-humidification like you can in most other vehicles. This means the one way to de-humidify (ie defog) the interior in the 24-25 is by pulling in outside air. Of course if you live in a place with humid winters (ie PNW) or dealing with outside smells (diesel exhaust, skunks, dairy farm, forest fire, etc.) then the heat-pump version really doesn't seem like a better system. At least to me. Again I don't think Ford changes how the recirculation works in any model year, but theoretically the 22-23 should be better at defogging the cabin if you could use the AC as a dehumidifier while using the resistive heat.

I have not seen such a comparison on the Lightning. Out of Spec thoroughly compared the Tesla PTC only vs heat pump cars, but the Tesla octovalve system is very very different from the Ford system as far as I can tell.

I would happily bring my '22 to the party to do some deep winter testing, if someone with a '24+ wanted to meet up in CO or UT. Highway range with heat on same settings, let the truck get cold soaked and check time to comfy cabin, cold soaked DCFC testing, etc.
