Hello all. Hopefully this is a quick answer. Military moving some 3,500 miles from Maine to Washington. My A2Z adapters are on the way. I was going to get a month of premium ABRP.

I saw that if you have a OBD2 sensor it can push real time info to ABRP for better planning. Any recommendations for OBD2? 2022 Lariat ER. Use Apple iPhone for mobile device. Is it as simple as pairing OBD2 to iPhone then it pushes to ABRP? Not super techy so any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you all!

I just did this. Get the OBD connector that ABRP recommends. - OBDLink CX This one on amazon. After you get it and plug it in, you have to open the ABRP app, add or edit your vehicle, then click the "link" button and follow the instructions. There's a good write-up about it HERE.

I got this one:
https://www.amazon.com/vgate-vLinker-Bluetooth-Diagnostic-Android/dp/B088LW211V?th=1

It works fine with the service when I tried it.

I ended up not using abrp much, they have fixed a few bugs since then though. Used to be it wouldn't route you across a lot of bridges in the US. Far as I can tell it has been fixed in that regard.

As for the obd2, if you leave it plugged in it will drain the 12v, even though it says there is minimal drain when in standby.

Welcome to Washington! I use the same adapter with a SR and configuring it is fairly easy. ABRP is OK but not fantastic, you can make it work by messing around with the departure and arrival state of charge percentage, don't go below 20% in the planner and you should be fine.

I haven't done a trip as long as you are but I have an SR and we like to go places where there are not many chargers.. I find that I use Plugshare a lot because it seems to be the one that people report their experiences on, so you know if station A is down but B is working or whatnot. Stay at places where you can charge overnight (bring a mobile charge connector) and the trip will be very easy. If you try to cannonball it in two days you will discover the limitations of the Lightning as an EV. "Out of Spec Reviews" on youtube has done a lot of stuff with long distance trips in the LIghtning, they recently did a 'race' of the Chevy Silverado, Cybertruck, Lightning, and Rivian across the country and the Lightning... did not do well. Great truck, so-so EV for really long range trips with no stops. Keeping the speed down (meaning 65, not 80) really helps.

I actually use the car scanner pro app configured for the Lightning, you can get the information that Lightning should have given you such as the current charging speed, the truck's 'true' state of charge which for some reason is usually lower than the displayed state of charge.

I use the Vlinker, same one that @queuewho linked above. I use it frequently on shorter trips (~1000mi) and a couple times of longer ones (~2000mi)

In my experience it helped with future planning but I really didn't like it as much as I thought I would with the CarPlay based planning. I think I was expecting Tesla level planning and it wasn't close.

The main issue I had with it is the consumption, while it does real time adjustments I find ABRP still doesn't have a great model for the Lightning.

But yes, it's pretty straightforward. Plug the adapter in. Load ABRP. Connect the live data/bluetooth and everything else will read.

Thanks for the suggestions! is it worth it to have the dongle? I was going to set ABRP to more frequent stops.

Should I use Apple Maps? Waze?
I personally use Waze and when I get to about 50% SOC, I have a general of my consumption and how much further I should be able to go. From there I do a search for an EA (or Tesla now) charger 40% away. It’s definitely more complicated but I prefer the routing and alerts of Waze.

Apple Maps is nice but it didn’t recalculate for me when I was running more effficient than you expected.

It really depends on your traveling style. If you want a set it and forget it, ABRP works with the dongle. Just make sure you spend the time to configure it.

Once configured, it can work well. The ā€œis it worth it?ā€ For me it isn’t. But it’s possible that you don’t need the Waze alerts, or have a strong preference for not doing mental math while you drive - that might make it worth it for you.
