Thanks, just updated the spreadsheet!

I traded my Flagstaff A-frame camper for a Nucamp T@b 400 last month, but I had a tailwind for the entire trip home. I’ll update next spring when I have some clean numbers, but it’s looking like 1.1-1.2 at 60 MPH. Not as good as I hoped.

I arrived in NH last night after pulling 3,200 miles behind my old Expedition and only averaged 10.7 MPG.

That's a unique rig! Just clarifying.... you went 120kms round trip, and it used a total of 54.45kwh? So, efficiency avg of 45.4kwh/100km?

That's not too bad overall....winter towing, and you'd have a theoretical 300km of range?

I am trying to guestimate my efficiency if I go ahead with a 17ft travel trailer, and upgrade the family from our tent trailer.

It is warm and the speeds were low, YMMV !

I've been towing our GeoPro 19FD for the past two years. It weighs around 4000lbs and is 21' to the hitch. I try to keep my speed to between 55-65 to get 1.2-1.3/ kWh. Speed kills and I see it right away. If I run at 70mph my efficiency drops to 1.0-1.1. In the norther mountains of PA there is still a scarcity of DCFCers so giving up even 10 miles of range to go a little fast might leave me short of getting to a place to charge. All that said, I love this truck and towing with it is smoother and easier than anything I've towed with.

Great, thanks!!

This is very similar to a unit that I am looking to get....around that same length, single axle, etc. And generally speaking i never tow at higher than 65 mph (105kmh), whether I was driving a gas vehicle or EV....i just don't think one should be towing something much faster than that.

So 1 - 1.2 miles/kwh.... is 1.6kms - 1.9kms per kwh...130kwh battery means 208kms to 247kms on a full charge, towing that unit. Mid range....227kms. Gives an efficiency of 57.1 kw/100kms.

That's about the distance I am able to do towing our tent trailer & bikes with my ID4... Kind of wish the truck could tow things a bit further than that, but i guess since I am used to the above distances when towing, i guess it is not the end of the world.

Yep, faster than 65 is too fast for towing at trailer. You don't want to have to slam on the brakes to avoid something at high speeds with 4000lbs pushing you. The only other problem with towing with this truck is it's very easy to forget the trailer is back there. That's how easy it is to tow with this thing.

My wife wants one now that our friends just got a new one. LOL She wants to camp out on the beach, which is allowed on Mustang Island and Padre Island National Seashore near Corpus Christi. Looking to stay around or below 4000 if possible. I don't thjink I can run much less than 65 on the Interstate in Texas, but we'll see. I put down an 0.8 efficiency in ABRP and it had me stopping 6 times between here and Corpus. Hopefully it's a little better than that.

One of the goals with my truck purchase was to be able to tow my race car from my home near Ft. Lauderdale to Sebring, Fl (140 miles) on a single charge. I succeeded!
2024 Flash (with 131kW extended range battery) towing a Featherlight open car hauler and Miata race car with a total trailer weight of just under 4k lbs. I drove at 65mph except for short distances through 3 towns where speed dropped to 35mph. I averaged 1.4 mi/kWh on the drive up, and 1.3 mi/kWh on the drive home, arriving with 28% and 18% state of charge for each respective trip.

The height of the car on the trailer is 60".

nothing stick up above legal limits, but it's really close). Trailer 2700, boat less than 4000. Base of keel is about 18 inches above the ground, draws a bit over 5ft. I can see under the hull so no tow mirrors required. Maximum beam is 9.3 ft (good luck measuring accurately it is 10 ft off the ground in the middle of the boat). I average 1.3 for the 9 miles to the lake in the spring and 1 for the drive back in the fall. Speeds never above 45.
C-scow 1.7 miles per kWh at 65-70 (20 foot sailboat with 7ft beam). Probably 1000 with the trailer. Hull height less than top of tailgate with the mast less than the height of the cab but higher than the closed tailgate.

I bought a new (to me) trailer this season. A Transcend Xplor 247BH (aka 24BHX) and took her for a test tow out to the scales.

Efficiency: Round trip was about 40 miles and got 1.1mi/kWh at 55-65mph.

Weather was 78F and sunny.
HVAC set on 69F and Auto 2.
Wind was ~12mph

Trailer is 29'11" hitch to bumper (wife said keep it under 30' ....made it!) with a GVWR of 6995
CAT weights: 3260FR / 4780RR / 5520 Trailer Axle for a GCWR 13560 and actual ready to camp trailer weight of 6420.

Well here she be.... Open Range 19BH trailer, GVWR of 4650lbs. Towed it from here empty, so about 3550lbs. Full 8ft wide trailer.

  • Towing stage 1: 68kms (42.5 miles), very minor overall elevation drop (<50m), temps 20*C to 15*C, speed around ~80-100kmh (50 - 62.5 mph), averaged about 90kmh. Got 51kwh/100kms (1.22 miles/kwh). Used 26% SOC. Theoretical range driving like this = 261kms
  • Towing stage 2: 105kms (65 miles), very minor overall elevation gain (<100m), temps 7-9*C, cruise set at 100kmh (62.5 mph), held that non stop for an hour. Very steady speed, wide open freeway style driving, late at night, no stops, etc. Got 66kwh/100kms (0.93 miles/kwh). Used 59% SOC. Theoretical range like this = 178kms.
  • Simple average of the two = 220kms.

Lessons:
  • Higher overall speed is a major range killer.
  • Constant speed is a range killer too....some amount of traffic/road style giving you occasional periods to slow down, helps a lot. Vs an hour straight holding 100kmh.
  • Temps seem to matter a decent amount too. Below 10*C, there is an impact to range. We will see if on the other side of it, towing in temps of 30*C or more causes similar drops.

Overall, pretty happy with this. I think more of our driving with the trailer will be the first type, vs the second type. And most of our distances between destinations are 350 - 450kms, so we should be able to do most of them with a single charge stop.

Once we do our biggest trip of the year, through the BC mountains with travel legs of 300 - 400kms at a time, I will post more info.
