I need to do some reading.....this will be incredibly helpful.
I just put a major change on my project out there, and I (still) have the goal of supporting alternative data sources.
I purchased a WiCan as a plan to support that as a data source, granted I purchased that to originally ingest the data into HomeAssistant and then my project gets data from HASS - but I'll need to read into this and look into it.
