Question for those who have towed with the Lightning. I will be moving stuff from our cabin to a new location about 120 miles away where I can keep an enclosed trailer. The shortest route only has one DC Fast Charger midway and to charge the trailer will be needed to be unhooked.

Can I make it at 60 MPH without charging in flat Florida if I charge up to 100% at the start?

Specs:
Truck:
2024 Lightning Platinum
1,501 lb Payload
850 lb tongue weight limit
8,500 Max Towing Capacity

Trailer I am looking at

Gvwr: 7,000 lbs

Yes I would say you are good. You can probably figure 1kwh per mile ish. Based on what you said the terrain is sounds like speed would be your biggest enemy. Should be no issue to make it 60 miles to the charger. Make sure you put in the trailer specs into the screen and the truck will give you a ball park. It’s entirely possible you “could” make it the entire 120 miles. Depends on many factors. Temp, winds etc. but the fact that you have a charger midway makes it much easier.

Doubt anyone could answer for certain but only one way to find out though. If you're averaging 1mi/kWh or worse, you'd better stop or slow down.

You could likely do the entire 120 miles without stopping to charge if you start at 100%. I could do 120 miles easy towing my 24' flat front travel trailer if I start at 100%. That V-nose trailer should be better air resistance wise for better range than my flat front.

1.1-1.2 miles/kWh towing my TT 55-65 mph roads.

Just re-read your OP and saw the Platinum trim. You'll likely get a touch less range than the other trim levels, but shouldn't have any issue especially with the charger available mid way.

You will be fine. Probably don’t need to stop but you could stop for a short charge while you pee if it makes you feel better.

As to the trailer, your max tongue weight is 850 pounds. Minus about 75 to 100 for a wdh, let's say that leaves 750. With 13% tongue weight, that limits you to a loaded trailer of 5,769 pounds. Subtracting the trailer weight of 2,260 pounds leaves max cargo of 3,509.

Looking at it another way, you have a max payload of 1,501. Subtract say 100 pounds for stuff you added after deliver, like maybe a tonneau cover, bed mat, floor mats. Subtract weight of yourself and passengers, that is remaining payload. Then Subtract 100 pounds for wdh. Divide by 13% for max trailer.

Assuming the 100 pounds of stuff, and say 300 pounds of driver and passenger, plus 100 for the wdh, leaves 1,001, so the tongue weight is your defining limit. But, load your bed and add two 200 pound passengers, and now your max cargo weight is lower.

It’s good to find someone as anal as I am when it comes to payload, tongue weight etc. I don’t expect to carry over 3000 lbs in the trailer.

Do you think I need a WDH with a 7’X16’ enclosed trailer? Trailer sway can be
”exciting”. I’ve towed 5x12 uhaul trailers many times without a WDH fine. When I towed a 28’ travel trailer even with a F-150 with a WDH it was at times uncomfortable.

I have plenty of towing experience with trailers which is why I went to a. 5th wheel RV and a F-450 when I had RV’s.

Yes, if you keep your speed down. The best way is to put up your current trip on the big screen and track your efficiency. If 60 mi/hour is too much, slow down to 50. The other way is to set your destination in an app that tracks, like the Ford app or ABRP (if you have the ODB2 dongle). That way you can watch your range vs your destination. Slow down if your range keeps dropping faster than the distance to your destination.

So here’s my experience towing a 8.5’x20’ enclosed flat nose car hauler with my ‘23 SR in the Orlando area. I wIl get 98 miles from 100% to 10% left almost every time I haul one of my fairly lightweight cars behind my truck. I found 55-60 to be optimal on a mix of back roads and freeways. I don’t own the trailer but rent it from the same guy several times a year on the peer to peer Neighbors Trailer Rental app. I used to own the exact same trailer but found it much more cost effective to rent. Since you have an ER it would seem 120 miles would be easily doable with proper planning for the stops.

ABRP seems interesting. Worth the annual fee?

Mine is 8.5x26' with 7' interior. Lightning pulls it like a train. Excellent performance. The problem is it gets 0.6 mi/kWh doing it. Unacceptable for long trips.

I pay for it and find it useful. Paying allows it to be used over Android Auto and gets the car data through Android Auto so the OBD dongle is not necessary. The OBD is able to access a couple more parameters but nothing that changes the calculations drastically. I will still use the OBD occasionally on longer trips.

ABRP also let's you set up different profiles for the same vehicle, so you can have fairly close calculations for regular driving, towing large trailer, towing small trailer, hauling, etc... Each profile becomes more accurate as you use it from the connected information through the OBD or AA, so trip planning gets more accurate after a trip, but it's pretty accurate even before that trip.

Google maps has better routing and traffic avoidance. ABRP is more customizable for planning, on the fly charger selection, and way better charger options and data.

Technically, you are supposed to use a WDH when you exceed 500 pounds of tongue weight. Says so right on the hitch. I wouldn't tow this trailer without one. A 6x12 UHaul isn't exceeding 4,400 total weight loaded, and is likely below that, and likely didn't exceed 500 pounds of tongue weight.

And I thought I got bad efficiency at .8mi/kWh pulling my boat at 60mph. :cwl:
