Plenty of reason to not charge to 100% if you don't need it.
In cold weather, you typically need every bit of that 100% if you commute over 100 miles per day. During the summer, I agree....charging to 100% is no bueno.

You don't need 100% to go 100 miles with an ER truck just because it's cold. I might consider charging to 100% if the weather is going to be dicey and I'm going that far, or I worry about power outages or being stuck somewhere. But you'd have to get 0.76 mi/kWh to use 100% of your battery in 100 miles.

All that said, I don't really care what people do. I just think it's bad advice and misleading for someone to say "There's no good reason not to charge to 100% in the winter." Very few people have a use case where that would be true every day.

Charge for your needs based on the conditions. Rarely is that 100% daily.

I spent way too much time worrying about this in 2019 when I got my first EV, but then I realized how little it mattered. People who charged to 100%, constantly used DCFC, and regularly drained to single-digits never saw more degradation than those who were more scrupulous with thier use.

I don’t think it matters. Especially because the Lightning has a software-locked battery. The ER modules add up to 144 kWh, but we only have access to 131. That means 100% isn’t a real 100%, and 0% isn’t a real 0%. That explains how predictable and deliberate my truck acted when I accidentally ran it down to 1% back in November.



I don’t charge to 100% because I don’t need to, but you wouldn’t hurt it if you did.

Exactly my point, I have a garage and charge 100% every day in winter in case I've got an unplanned trip or other emergency. Winter is already stressful for people, keep tour truck 100% ready for what it, it is not hurting it at all.

There is alot of drama with no real benefit about 100% charging. In summer, when I'm easily 300 miles I'll drive all week between 100% charges. In winter, plug in every night. I think this is especially important for new users who are shock at winter range too, which isn't going to stop.

That's completely opposite of what fordrecommends. They clearly state to only charge to 100 if you're going to use it.
