I have been messing with the GOM over the last few days too.

My thoughts

The GOM uses a short term rolling average, maybe 5 or 10 minutes. But, above 80% it starts adding a bias to make the range appear more optimistic (or uses the previous average from the typically slow driving the few miles before home).

I just observed my GOM actually INCREASE in range when going from 55mph roads to 35mph roads. I also observed the GOM dramatically slow its loss when turning off HVAC.

It uses hundreds of miles.

I just returned from a 70 minute drive monitoring the GOM and watched the GOM go UP when my speeds changed from 60mph to a 35mph drive through town.

When traveling down country roads I was loosing about 12 miles per 5% SOC lost, then on more steady 60mph stretch with the HVAC on high that was 18 miles reduced for a 5% SOC reduction, then it was a 5 mile reduction for a 5% SOC difference when my speeds dropped and i turned HVAC off. It was definitely adapting in the short term.

I usually do a little calculation when I power up to my normal 85%. It's often over 300, sometimes over 320 pending how my drive has been as of late. When I drive to a park nearby I'm always around 4miles/kwh. I should do that for an extended period of time.

It uses hundreds of miles for the estimate when you start, then as you drive it evaluates if it is different, and adjusts. Think weighted average with more weight on the immediate driving.

I can guarentee it does not use hundreds of miles when you start. I just posted a thread discussing getting to a low SOC. To achieve that, and Immediately prior to charging up from that (to 100%) i took the battery from 38% to 5% in a single highway drive of over an hour with speeds over 70mph (so around 1.9-2 mi/kwh). My trip1 has 5000 miles on it with an average of 2.1 mi/kwh. I typically average around 2.1 on my daily commute. Yet when charging to 100% it showed a range of 347 miles and an energy to empty of 131.5, which calculates to 2.64 mi/kwh. The starting estimate was nothing like any of my previous drives would explain.

The GOM is more of a distraction than it is a navigation tool. I keep my eye on the mi/kWh and the remaining percentage battery charge. The mi/kWh varies tremendously depending on the ambient temperature and the terrain. Last February we had a day where the temperature was about -18 degrees Fahrenheit. Mi/kWh dropped down to about 1.5 and I abandoned my planned trip for the day after I tried to add some charge at my Ford dealer’s high speed DC charger and found the cables too stiff to even get them to plug into the truck. In contrast, now that warm weather has returned I am getting 2.9-3.1 mi/kWh which theoretically gives my ER Lightning 360-390 miles of range.

And I always get better mi/kWh going down hill than up.

I plug in 1.9mi/kWh and the battery % into the calculator. The 20% range it spits out I'll feel comfortable with.
