That is sort of true in my case, but not completely. The Lightning is actually my 4th F150.

I used to be (and still am at heart) a HUGE Mustang fan, especially Shelbys. about 9 years ago or so I had a 2011 GT500 as a daily driver, then I put on a larger supercharger and had it tuned. After that, My wife said no more driving it in upstate NY winters, so I got a "beater" pickup truck (higher mile extended cab 2010 XL) for the colder months. After having the beater for a bit, and realizing it was quite nice for road trips, I upgraded to a 2016 XLT supercrew (2.7L). Great truck. Very nice for road trips and quite helpful around the house and for the robotics team I had taken over as lead coach for. Around this time I also traded my GT500 for a 2019 GT350 as my daily March-November. After I put my initial order in for the Lightning, I knew I was shifting away from ICE vehicles, so I sold the GT350 and traded the 2016 XLT for a 2016 Raptor so I could get a chance to own/drive one before going all electric. That raptor got traded for my Lightning.

haha this is the same reason i got the lightning...although not a beater for sure....she didn't want me to drive the cayman in the winter (which yeah yeah..i get...but i love driving the car too much)

but remember that many of the components used in the lightning are the same as ICE F-50's. so I'm not worried about parts.
Not really all that many critical parts are shared actually. None of the drivetrain and probably very few suspension parts. They share some Interior and exterior parts, but those aren't critical. In theory, Ford should have critical parts available. But in practice, I expect part shortages and repair delays will worsen over time. A key question is: "How long am I going to be without my Lightning if something in the drivetrain fails?"

good news is that electric components are much (much, much, much) less likely to fail... we'll all be keeping our fingers crossed.

True, but headlights, taillights, etc. can still be damaged in a collision or by debris and those are unique to the lightning.

Also - the EV specific control modules are the only things I have had fail on the truck - and leave me stranded ~8 hours from home with my family.

I have a reservation for the Slate Truck. I'm not really sure if they'll succeed but I'm hopeful. Even if they do finally release it, I doubt I'll be first in line to buy. It would just be a fun 3rd vehicle as a run-around toy anyway. I wouldn't buy it as a primary vehicle.
Man, I love the Slate concept. Been following it closely. I can't logically swap out a Lightning for one even though the size is way more appropriate for what I use a truck for. Lightning is just too good. We'll see when it releases though. Maybe I can justify it when the little one isn't so little anymore and doesn't need a car seat. But haulin' the family in the Lightning is just too comfy when the missus needs to sit in the back. Heck, maybe they'll have bench seating at that point. The SUV version of the Slate would be the only one I could make work and I'm not wild about an SUV.

If I didn't already own the Lightning though I'd be seriously considering it as our family's second vehicle.

Interestingly I've also been looking into an EV9 as a replacement for my '22. My inlaws got one a little while back and it seems great. With current kbb value, the 'wind' model is nearly an even trade after incentives.

I've got some things I need the truck for coming up though, might wait til March at least. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for sure.

What are they offering for your '22? (If you don't mind sharing)

Resale will find an equilibrium with the used market. These are just trucks afterall. And probably work for 90% of use cases. There are a lot of people who will take a "risk" on an EV if it's 2 or 3k cheaper than it's GAS option even if they don't want an EV.

I don't really understand the logic of jumping from 1 Ev to another to save money to be honest. The technology will continue to move at a rapid pace and I would not be surprised if in 7 years something like half of current EV's are "cancelled' for evolved products.

It will be survival of the fittest just like anything else. Heck Tesla is cancelling Model X and S.

So - I have been nervous about both resale value and (EV) parts availability ever since Ford made the cancellation announcement, so when I saw our local Kia dealership had some nice deals on EV9s I went in to check one out. A few days later and I have a Blue EV9 GT-line on order. As long as the deal holds up when it arrives (est. 1-3 months), I will be saying goodbye to my Lightning. It has been a great journey and I still think the Lightning is the best utility EV truck on the market. For those interested here is how the pro/con comparison works out between them.

  • Cargo - Lightning is the absolutely winner, and I will miss the bed and the frunk, but the EV9 should be able to handle 99% of my use cases.
  • Maneuverability / Ease of Driving - EV9 is both 3 feet smaller and has a ~7 foot tighter turning radius
  • Performance - Lightning is a bit quicker, but seat of the pants feel is pretty close. EV9 is better around turns.
  • Range - Lightning by a little bit (320 vs 270 EPA), but the EV9 loses less at highway speeds and in the cold
  • Charging - EV9 wins by a long shot
  • Passenger comfort - EV9 wins, especially with the 2nd row captain's chairs.
  • Onboard power - Lightning by a long shot, but I never really used the 240V outlet and the EV9 has a 110V one.
  • Price - EV9 is a little cheaper (GT Line vs. Lariat ER)
  • Software - From what I have used of it so far, the Kia's seems to have more features and is snappier. Also, more actual buttons. It does not however have a hands free mode like Bluecruise. I will miss that.

If I end up making the trade when it comes in, I will miss you all, and may still check in from time to time!
Nice summary. Given the shocking depreciation of EV's, you might want to check on Kia's lease deals, if they have any. I'm quite happy with my $300 lease on my 2025 Lightning. If things have settled down in 3 years, I may buy something instead of leasing.

That is a fantastic payment! I am currently over $1,200/mo. on my 2022 Lightning. I do a lot of mile which makes leasing harder, but it is definitely in the mix!

Good point. I just sold my old Dodge Durango to some folks who were thrilled to get it. My Lightning will cost me far more than the Durango did, despite the Durango's awful fuel economy.

To save money, buy a 10 year old Prius.
