NC Outer Banks Charging Update

Good news for EV drivers traveling through the Outer Banks. A Rivian supercharging station has opened in the last couple of weeks in Nags Head. It’s in the same shopping center as the Tesla Supercharger. It has at least one pull-through, which makes charging a Lightning simple. And no adapter needed. The station was just coming online last week, so maybe some shakedown issues will arise, but it was flawless for me.

Yes. That’s it. So call me confused. There was a Rivian electrical contractor at the site who told me he was “commissioning” it. He was in several of the chargers and new signs were stacked up ready to be bolted on. It looked brand spanking new, so I assumed commissioning meant “launching” or “opening.”. It was also about 25 degrees with a 30-40 MPH wind out of the north so I didn’t spend much time outside of the truck chatting or studying the site. Forgive the false alarm.

I was at the Ionna meetup in Garner this weekend and a Rivian tech was there. The Rivian site in Henderson had been having problems for a while and they were in town to fix it. I wonder if they headed to the OBX to update that one as well.

This one? Think that's been open a while. This was early June last year when I went by.

I figured out how I missed it for 6+ months. I have been using the Tesla chargers that are in the same parking lot — but always on my way south, using the northernmost entrance to the lot.
The Rivian chargers are south of the Tesla chargers and partially hidden by plants. I never noticed them. This was the first time I entered the lot while driving north (due to mileage impacts of brutal headwind and cold) and used the southern entrance - closest to the Rivian facility. A reminder how a closely-held routine can limit one’s knowledge of the world.

The only reason I noticed them was because it was walking to Outback to eat while I charged enough at the superchargers to get back to Raleigh.

When I was last at the Hatteras ferry terminal (with my Kia EV9, not Lightning) there was a charger but not operational.

The two chargers at the ferry terminal are regularly out of service and, when working, charge at a feeble maximum of 6KW. They are almost pointless.
