Can anyone tell me why when I tried to connect to a Tesla charger, I couldn’t connect?

I had to go to a funeral in East Texas on Friday and went to charge my truck at the one of the two high speed chargers in Deep East Texas. I went to the Tesla super charger in Nacogdoches. It was shown on Google Maps, but not on my Ford App or my Tesla App. There was a sign that posted Tesla Charging only, but I have never seen that before. When I arrived, I couldn’t connect through the Ford or the Tesla app.
I had to drive 30 minutes back to the only OTHER fast charger in East Texas at the Hyundai dealer in Lufkin. It basically burned an hour and a half of our time..

Sorry for your loss, but yes, you answered your own question. Some superchargers are Tesla only, Ford and Tesla apps know that it's Tesla only and that you aren't in one, most mapping apps only know that a Tesla station is there but don't classify whether you can use it or not.

Basically you can't use any Tesla charger labelled 150kw.

PlugShare.com also confirms that the Nacogdoches, TX location is Tesla only. Sometimes the Ford app will show the Tesla location, but will show it as non-compatible, sometimes it will not show at all. Generally if you have told the Tesla app that you are driving a Lightning, it will not even show non-compatible chargers.
The sign that says "Tesla Charging only" can usually be ignored. Prior to releasing some chargers to non-Tesla vehicles, those signs were often there, but almost never removed if the charger was updated. In other words, it is an unreliable source of information.
Noting that the Nacogdoches location is 150KW (according to PlugShare), indicates that it is a V2 charger and those are never available to non-Tesla vehicles.

Use the Ford app to find a charger.

Or, use the Tesla app, after entering your vehicle and that you have an adapter.

Or, use PlugShare, after selecting Hide Tesla Only and Hide Rivian Only.

Or, use ABRP, after entering vehicle and adapter.

Or, use GoogleMaps with Android Auto, after connecting and then telling it vehicle and that you have an adapter.

Don't waste your time wondering whether the location is V2, or V3, or old or new - use the apps first.

The sign was irrelevant. You are putting meaning to it that it doesn't have. What it says is:

TESLA that's a company name

Then it says

Vehicle Charging Only

Meaning - don't park there unless charging. That is why they're in different fonts...

That's not what the sign means.

Tesla v3+ chargers are the only ones that work with CCS vehicles. The older slow stuff (v2), many less 150kw, often much less, won't work with our trucks or anything modern. While refits are clearly being rolled out, there are a lot of those old Superchargers out there.

If the Supercharger is not visible in the Tesla app, it isn't going work.

I made this mistake once myself. We can only use SOME of the Tesla chargers. If you have set up the Tesla app sayinjg you have a Lightning, the app will only show you the chargers you can use.
I use ONLY the Tesla app to get info about Tesla chargers.

If the charger doesn't show up for you in the Tesla app, then you can't use that charger.

Always check before driving to a charger. The best way to check compatibility of Tesla chargers is to put your truck into the Tesla app and indicate that you have a charging adapter. The app will show you all of the chargers that you can use. If you stumble across a SuperCharger that doesn't show for you in the app, it won't work. The Ford app as well as ABRP and PlugShare also have reasonably up-to-date compatibility information.

While many Tesla SuperChargers are compatible, some aren't. In particular, all of the older V2 (120kW or 150kW) and Urban (72kW) SuperChargers lack the correct hardware to "talk" to our trucks (and can't be upgraded), so we cannot use these chargers. In addition, there are some V3 (250kW), V3+ (325kW) and V4 (500kW) chargers that are restricted to Tesla vehicles only.

Yeah, the other thing that I am learning is that if I want to use a Tesla Level 2 charger, I have to have a DIFFERENT adapter than the Tesla Fast Charge adapter that came with my truck…
