Any thoughts on this situation. A week ago Thursday I started my 23 Lightning Lariat ER with 21000 miles and got a service vehicle soon message. I looked up the error and found it was a power train fault. I called the dealer on Friday and was told to bring it in. I figured it would likely be there a couple days so i took it in on Monday.

The service guy looked up the error and said it appeared to be related to the shifter module but they would check it out. They called later in the day and said it was the shifter module but they are on back order so I could come pick up the truck. When I picked it up I asked if there was any problem with driving it. He said no but did say he’d seen some where the shifter would lock into Drive or Reverse. Since mine seemed to function fine I continued to drive it.

About 2 days after I brought it home I noticed the error message was gone when I start the truck and the wrench light is gone as well. It’s like it fixed itself. Then today I noticed that I had a sync update on the 17th to 25.2.1.6X. I think that happened after the error went away but I’m not positive.

So my question is do I go ahead and let them replace the shift module when it comes in or assume the truck fixed itself? I’ve always felt original assembly was preferable to repair assembly. Any thoughts?

Yes. It’s likely going to crap out again down the line.

Mine is a 2022 and not involved in the CSP and I swapped mine for the rotary dial vs from a 2022 Escape. Not going back.

I am in the same boat. Had the warning pop up a couple times a few weeks ago. Haven't called for service yet, and it no longer pops up. Will still get it in soon.

I’d definitely say replace since it’d be under warranty. Are u considering replacing it with the rotary shifter?

I thought about the rotary shifter but I don’t see how the plastic piece comes out. Looks like it’s all one piece including the cup holder

Quite a few videos on it. If you depend on the truck I would still purchase a cheaper used rotary shifter to have on hand as a backup/replacement. If the shifter is the issue and the truck is not drivable and the dealer can't get a new one, you can save yourself until they do. A lot of people have replaced it, you'll figure out how to get the old one out, even if it means just taking the old one out and laying the knob down in the cubby plugged in.

My Lightning intermittently had the error pop up. Dealer replaced the Shifter and all it fine for now.

I'm in the same situation. I've had the same error message multiple times over the past year, and each time it resolved itself. But I finally scheduled it in for service, and I need a new shifter also. My truck is drivable, and I haven't had a new error message while I've been waiting for the part to come in. But I figure it's better to let Ford replace it now under warranty.

It’s actually easy enough as long as you watch the video and read my post in the tread: https://www.f150lightningforum.com/...ion-w-3d-printed-rotary-shifter-holder.25541/

Yeah, once you've done it ...you realize it would only take you about 20 minutes tops to do it again if you had to. It's not that hard. Just don't follow the workshop manual about removing the entire center stack and you'll be fine 😄

Unbelievable the amount of stuff they want you to remove...when it's entirely unnecessary.

“REPLACE” whole truck!

It teases you at first “Yellow/red” wrench light up and goes away.

Then it’s back and tells you to park the vehicle soon or to take to the dealership as it won’t start after shutting off.

So, you now feel as your truck is in shop more than home due to the same “Powertrain” malfunctions.

Had several PTM, total 5-7 times between August 2024 and June 2025, two heater cores, one shifter, one low volt battery, and one voltage regulator. I honestly believed it was leading up to a messy high voltage battery replacement so had to say goodbye!

Hope you get it settled and it never gives problems again.

Your posting made me glad I leased my current Lightning. That way I can walk away after 3 years if my truck has issues like yours. Hopefully not.

Regardless, I rarely keep vehicles past their basic warranty period. The only exception was a 2015 Lexus RX450h Hybrid. It never was in the shop for issues in the 8 years of ownership. I handed it down to our adult daughter.
